SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After the first match up between Syracuse (20-26, 8-11) and Cornell (20-26, 8-12) was cancelled due to rain, the Orange and the Red Storm wil square off on Tuesday, April 30 at 3 p.m. in a doubleheader at the SU Softball Stadium.
The contest marks the final non-conference game for SU this season as it will wrap up the 2013 regular season this weekend, hosting Providence in a three-game series at home. Syracuse will open the weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday before closing the series with one more game on Senior Day, which is slated for Sunday.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
Pitching five complete games and surrendering just six earned runs, while registering a 6-0 shutout, senior Stacy Kuwik helped the Orange to a 3-2 record last weekend. All nine batters in the order recorded at least one or more hits across both games in a midweek doubleheader against Rutgers.
Junior Shirley Daniels highlighted game one with a three-run homer for the victory. Syracuse went 1-2 in its weekend doubleheader, featuring a 4-1 win against No. 24 USF. Junior Jasmine Watson helped SU to the victory with a homer in the top of the sixth to secure the win. Both of the losses to the Bulls were by no more than one run, including a tough 2-1 loss in eight innings on Sunday in the series finale.
SPEEDY SKILLS:
Senior Veronica Grant matched a career high mark with three stolen bases in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at No. 24 USF. The mark matches the SU single-game record and is the second time she has stolen three bases in one game in her career at Syracuse. The original record was set in 2010 by former Orange Lisaira Daniels.
29 AND COUNTING:
Junior Shirley Daniels is a base stealing machine this year. The rightfielder is leading the team with 29 stolen bases which ranks first in the BIG EAST and 22nd nationally. The rightfielder successfully stole two bases at USF on Sunday, bringing her season total to 29, which matches the SU single-season record that was originally set by her sister, Lisaira Daniels in 2010. With a 12-14 mark in conference steals, she is tied for third on the BIG EAST single-season record list.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED:
Cornell will return to the SU Softball Stadium for another shot at a doubleheader that was rained out earlier this month. The Big Red is currently 20-26 overall and 8-12 in the Ivy League after going 1-3 in a four-game conference finale against Princeton last weekend.
A solid group of Cornell heavy hitters have helped the Big Red to a .294 team average. Six members of the roster are currently hitting higher than .304, including five who have registered more than 40 hits this season. Erin Belles is leading the group with a .638 slugging clip and a team-high seven home runs. With a team-best 33 RBI, Christina Villalon is also a scoring threat with 46 hits, including 17 doubles, one triple and six homers. In the circle for Cornell, Alyson Onyon is at the helm of the pitching staff with a 3.51 ERA, and a 14-16 record this year.
