IN THE POLLS
If the polls are any indication, it should be tight racing on the Schuylkill on Saturday. Syracuse received 28 votes in this week's CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, placing it fourth among "others receiving votes" crews. The Quakers are just behind the Orange with 21 votes and the Huskies received two votes.
Â
Despite its strong performance at BU last week, the Orange lost eight votes from the 36 it garnered in the first poll of the season on March 20.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
Syracuse turned in a dominant performance on the Charles River last Saturday, winning the Kittell Cup while sweeping all races vs. Boston University.
Â
In its second week of racing of the spring season and its first with its complete varsity eight lineup, head coach Justin Moore's Orange made a strong statement, ending a two-year Kittell Cup drought with an 11.5-second victory. It was Syracuse's fifth overall victory in the 11-year history of the Kittell Cup, awarded annually to the winner of the SU-BU V8 race.
Â
"I was so proud for our seniors on this day because the racing the team did today was a statement about what has been happening in this program over the last three years," Moore said. "It was really the middle 1,000 meters in each race that carried us through and the work that is put in in the off-season and at practice comes through in the middle of the race course."
Â
SU's 2V8 and 3V8 also recorded wins, while the V4A and V4B finished one-two.
Â
ORANGE CHALLENGE CUP HISTORY
The Orange Challenge Cup has been awarded to the winner of the annual Syracuse-Pennsylvania-Northeastern varsity eight race since 1979, except in 1994, when no race was held. Northeastern leads with 16 wins, Penn has won 11 times, and the Orange was won six times, with five of those six coming in the last 12 years.
Â
Syracuse is looking to win its first Orange Challenge Cup since 2009. Current senior and Natalie Mastracci was a freshman member of the varsity eight in 2009 that last claimed the cup for the Orange.
Â
Penn has a two-year run of winning the cup, ending a 15-year drought, with SU finishing third each of the last four seasons since its win in '09. SU's last win on the Schuylkill came in 2004. The Huskies have won the two races in Philadelphia since then (2007, 2010).
