SYRACUSE, N.Y. - No. 16 Dartmouth edged No. 15 Syracuse men's rowing in a tight varsity eight race to win the Packard Cup on a rain-soaked Saturday morning at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse. The Orange recorded victories in the second and third varsity eights in its lone home regatta of the season.
Â
In a close V8 battle in which the two crews were within a few seats of each other over the entire 2,000 meters, Dartmouth was able to hold off head coach Dave Reischman's Orange by .7 seconds, ending SU's two-year Packard Cup run. It was just the second time in the last eight years the Big Green has won the Packard. Dartmouth's bow-ball crossed in 6:08.9, while SU finished in 6:09.6.
Â
SU's 2V8 recorded the largest margin of victory on the day, winning in its race in a time 6:11.2, nearly eight seconds ahead of the Big Green's crew which crossed in 6:19.0.
Â
The Orange started the morning's racing with a 4.1-second victory in the third varsity eight race on the Onondaga Lake Outlet course, finishing in 6:05.5, while the Big Green crossed in 6:09.6.
Â
Driving rain and wind then descended on the area, causing a delay and, eventually, the moving of the first and second varsity eight races to the Orange's buoyed practice course in Maple Bay in the northwest corner of Onondaga Lake, which was sheltered from the rougher waters of the main course.
Â
Due to Dartmouth's varsity four being scratched, the day's racing concluded with an instra-squad race between three Syracuse fours.
Â
Anthony Ladd commissioned the Packard Cup in 1959 to honor his father-in-law, Edward N. Packard (SU Class of 1906). The cup, made of sterling silver, is awarded annually to the winner of the Syracuse-Dartmouth race. Packard was the stroke of the 1904 varsity eight, the first SU crew to capture an IRA championship.
Â
Postseason racing begins for the Orange next weekend as it heads to Worcester, Mass. for the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 19.
