SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â No. 16 Syracuse men's crew heads to Worcester, Mass. and Lake Quinsigamond for the Eastern Sprints this Sunday. The event is the conference championship for the highly-competitive Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) and determines berths for the IRA National Championship on May 31-June 2.

Head coach Dave Reischman's varsity eight enters the event seeded 13th in the EARC. The top nine finishers receive automatic bids to the IRA regatta. The Orange also has entries in the second varsity eight, varsity four and third varsity eight categories.

In the Polls
Syracuse is ranked No. 16 in the latest USRowing Collegiate Poll after spending the previous two weeks at No. 15. The Orange has been ranked between No. 13 and No. 16 all season.

Last Year at Sprints
SU's varsity eight, ranked 11th nationally in the USRowing Collegiate Poll and seeded eighth out of 18 crews in the regatta, made the grand final at the highly-competitive Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges conference championship by finishing second in its morning heat. SU (5:57.351) beat No. 7 and fifth-seeded Cornell (5:59.779) by over two seconds for second place behind No. 3 nationally and second-seeded Brown (5:54.643). The top two finishers from each of three heats made the grand final and the top nine finishers overall receive automatic bids to the IRA Regatta.

Syracuse's V8 went on to finish sixth in the grand final behind five top 10 crews. No. 3 Brown won the race, followed by No. 2 Harvard, No. 6 Wisconsin, No. 10 Princeton and No. 5 Navy.

Syracuse took second-place in the open varsity four, won the second varsity eight petite final over Yale and Boston University, and the freshmen eight posted a fifth-place finish in the petite final.

Last Time Out
No. 16 Dartmouth edged No. 15 Syracuse men's rowing in a tight varsity eight race to win the Packard Cup on a rain-soaked Saturday morning on May 11 at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse. The Orange recorded victories in the second and third varsity eights in its lone home regatta of the season.
