Women's Rowing Seeks BIG EAST Title

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â Syracuse women's rowing heads to Mercer Lake, N.J. on Saturday seeking its first BIG EAST Championship since 2003 and third overall. The Orange is seeded third in the varsity eight and looking to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship on May 31-June 2.

Head coach Justin Moore's Orange, which finished second overall in last season's championship, is fielding five boats in its final BIG EAST event before moving to the ACC in 2013-14. SU will compete in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight and has two varsity four entries.

Schedule
The morning racing begins with time trials to determine positions for the finals.
8:00 a.m. – First Varsity 8 Time Trials
8:08 a.m. – Second Varsity 8 Time Trials
8:16 a.m. – Varsity 4 Time Trials
8:24 a.m. – Third Varsity 8 Time Trials

The finals begin at 11 a.m. with the third varsity four grand final and conclude at 12:20 p.m. with the varsity eight grand final. Click the link at the top for the complete schedule.

Syracuse is once again garnering votes in this week's CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll. The Orange is fifth among "others receiving votes" with 14 points. Notre Dame heads into the weekend ranked No. 11, while Louisville is ranked No. 19.

Last Year's BIG EAST Championship
SU concluded its 2012 season on a high note on May 13, 2012 as the Orange finished second at the BIG EAST Championship at Lake Mercer, N.J. The Orange took gold in the varsity four, while claiming second in the grand finals of three of the other events in which it entered boats, including the varsity eight.

No. 15 Notre Dame took first in four of five point-scoring grand finals to win its ninth-straight BIG EAST Championship with 111 points, edging the Orange (97) by 14 points. Louisville finished third, 10 points behind SU, and Georgetown was fourth.

It is the Orange's highest overall finish since coming in second in 2009. SU was fourth in 2011 and third in 2010.

Syracuse's top boats last competed on April 27 in two sessions of racing at the Oregon State Classic on Dexter Lake in Lowell, Ore. The Orange varsity eight and varsity four each finished fifth, while the second varsity eight placed second.

The five-way regatta featured crews from the host Beavers, San Diego, No. 11 Stanford and No. 18 Washington State. It was the Orange's first races on the West Coast since 2010.

The Orange then went 2-for-2 in the races it field boats at Cornell on May 4, defeating the host Big Red and Dartmouth in the third varsity eight and varsity four "B" on the Cayuga Lake Inlet.
