Capital One Academic All-District Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams
Three members of the Syracuse track and field/cross country teams earned 2013 Capital One Academic All-District honors for their performance in the classroom, in the community and on the track. Sophomore Martin Hehir, junior Reed Kamyszek and graduate student Lauren Penney were all named to the Capital One Academic All-District Track/Cross Country teams.
Hehir had an impressive year in both cross country and track and field. He won the silver medal in the BIG EAST Indoor Championship in the 3000m run. At the conference outdoor championship, Hehir won the bronze in both the 5000m and 10,000m races. Hehir also competed in the NCAA East Prelims, finishing 20th overall in the 5000m race.
The Washingtonville, NY native won the individual BIG EAST Cross Country title in the fall, becoming the first Orange to do so and helped his team win its third BIG EAST title in four years. Â He was an All-BIG EAST and All-NCAA Northeast Region honoree and named a USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree for cross country. The biology major was named to the 2011-12 BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
Kamyszek was named All-BIG EAST in cross country after finishing 10th at the BIG EAST Championship. He placed ninth (14:27.03) in the 5000m at the BIG EAST Indoor T&F Championship. At the BIG EAST Outdoor T&F Championship, he finished 12th in the 10,000m race. The Grand Rapids, Mich. native was named to the All-BIG EAST Academic Team in both 2010-11 and 2011-12. Kamyszek is a biochemistry major in the College of Arts and Sciences
In her final season competing for the Orange, Penney set four school records this season in the outdoor 1,500m run (4:13.87) and 5,000m run (15:56.80) and the indoor mile (4:37.41) and 3,000m run (9:06.32). The Succasunna, N.J. native was to the Division I Indoor USTFCCCA All-America Second Team after finishing in 12th place at the NCAA Indoor T&F Championship in the 3000m run. She won the bronze in the 3000m race at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship and the silver in the 5000m run at the BIG EAST Outdoor championship.
Penney will represent Syracuse at the NCAA Championship in the 5000m run after finishing fourth overall at the NCAA East Prelims. Penney is studying literary education and has been named to the All-BIG EAST Academic team for four straight years.
