SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â Head coach Justin Moore is excited to announce the Syracuse women's rowing incoming class for 2013-14. The class is comprised of nine rowers and two coxswains that will help lead the Orange into its first ACC season after finishing the 2013 campaign ranked No. 19 in the country, its highest ranking in eight years.
Â
"This is the deepest and most tallented class that we've recruited during my tenure at Syracuse," Moore said. "There is a wealth of competitve racing experience both domestically and internationally in this group. Â What is most exciting to me about this group is that, as a whole, it contains women who are competitive and who want to strive to contribute to creating an environment of excellence. They see what is happening here at Syracuse and want to be a part of it. I'm excited for all of these young women to build off of their high school experience and make our program faster."
Â
Charlotte Balogh, Rower, 5-10, Sudbury, Mass. /Community Rowing
Coach Moore on Balough: "Charlotte is coming to Syracuse from the competitive high-performance environment of Community Rowing in Boston. Charlotte, an outstanding student who is already a published author, chose Syracuse because it was a great fit academically and athletically."
Â
Chelsea Frawley, Rower, 5-11, Melbourne, Australia / Melbourne University, Banks Rowing Club
Coach Moore on Frawley: "Chelsea has spent the last several years honing her skills in small boats. At the 2013 Australian National Championships she won bronze in the U21 1x, silver in the U23 2x and gold in the Women's U23 8+. We are extremely excited for Chelsea to bring her power and competitive drive to the program at Syracuse."
Â
Â
Alexandra Gill, Rower, 5-10, Plymouth, Mass. / Tabor Academy
Coach Moore on Gill:Â "Lexi is a mult-sport athlete who found rowing later in high school. She is a powerful young athlete who will bring a lot of energy to our team. She and teammate Saydee McQuay led their Tabor crew to the finals at NEIRA's this year. From the moment she visited campus, she started bleeding orange."
Â
Â
Shannon McCann, Rower, 5-11, Little Neck, N.Y. / Row New York
Coach Moore on McCann: "Shannon spent the last two summers training within the USRowing Junior National Team system as part of the High Performance Camp and the Junior Worlds Development Team where she represented the USA in Germany. She is a hard-nosed athlete and racer who will only continue to develop in the high level training program we have at Syracuse."
Â
Â
Maxiel Mejia, Rower, 6-1, Bronx, N.Y. / The Kent School
Coach Moore on Mejia: "When Max came on her official visit, we knew she'd be a great fit on the team. She felt the fit as well. She recently led Kent to bronze at the competitive NEIRA Rowing Championships for the second year in a row."
Â
Â
Claire Meyers, Rower, 5-11, Fayetteville, N.Y. / Fayetteville-Manlius, Syracuse Chargers
Coach Moore on Meyers: "We are thrilled that we were able to keep our local talent in Syracuse. Claire won the Scholastic National Championship with FM in 2011. She is a driven athlete who will bring intensity to training."
Â
Â
Saydee McQuay, Rower, 5-9, North Dartmouth, Mass./ Tabor Academy
Coach Moore on McQuay: "Saydee isn't afraid of challenges both academically and athletically; we love that. She helped Tabor to a fifth-place finish at NEIRA's. I'm excited to see what she can do on a year-round training program."Â
Â
Â
Lily Powers, Coxswain, Fairfield, Conn. / Saugatuck Rowing Club
Moore on Powers: "Lily's results speak for themselves. She drives for Saugatuck Rowing Club and has led them into the finals at the USRowing Youth National Championship and to gold at Regionals. We were thrilled to see her line at the Head of the Charles; she showed poise, confidence and was obviously in control of her crew - all traits that we look for in drivers!"
Â
Â
Harriet Taylor, Rower, 6-0, Ascot, United Kingdom / Charters SchoolÂ
Coach Moore on Taylor: "Harriet was selected for the final trials for the Great Britain Junior Rowing Team, and to represent England at Home Countries International Regatta. She spent the past summer on her gap year rowing with the Melbourne University Boat Club in Australia and brings over six years of diverse racing and rowing experience to Syracuse in both sculling and sweep events."
Â
Ailish Tinney, Rower, 5-10, Sydney, Australia/ The Brentwood School
Coach Moore on Tinney:Â "Ailish is an all-around powerful athlete who was also a member of the New South Wales State basketball team. She has lived all over the world and moved several times during her high school career, but this did not get in the way of her continuing improvement in the world of rowing. We can't wait to see her progress when she stays in one place and has a full year of training under her belt."
Â
Â
Alyssa Vasiliou, Coxswain, Bethesda, Md. / Walt Witman, TBC
Coach Moore on Vasiliou:Â "Alyssa is the top coxswain for both Walt Whitman High School and the highly-competitive Thompsons Boat Club. She just received Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention. This season, she drove TBC to a seventh-place finish at Head of the Charles in the 1V. Her Whitman crew earned a bronze at the Stotesbury Regatta and a finals appearance at Scholastic Nationals."
