SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â Syracuse University and Orange women's rowing head coach Justin Moore are hosting the USRowing Women's Pre-Elite National Team Camp from July 8 to Aug. 11. SU rising junior Amy Ludovici is one of the 10 collegiate rowers selected from across the country to train at the camp.
Â
"The emphasis of this camp is small-boat skills and the development of sculling in the United States," Moore said. "Having these women row in doubles and learning how to scull and becoming competent in sculling boats increases their ability to have success in their post-collegiate rowing careers."
Â
The camp, coached by Moore, uses the Orange's rowing facilities, including the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse and indoor training facilities at Archbold Gym and Flanagan Gym. In addition, the Syracuse community has put its support behind the camp, providing host families for the aspiring national-level rowers.
Â
"We have a great community that supports these women," Moore said. "They are providing free housing through host families and the university has been really gracious in opening up the facilities at no cost to these national team aspiring athletes."
Â
The Pre-Elite Camp is focused on developing athletes for the U23 and Senior National Teams. The goal of this camp is to teach skills necessary to compete at the elite level by introducing and developing sculling (rowing with an oar in each hand), as opposed to sweeping (both hands on one oar), gaining fitness and increasing strength-to-weight ratio. The athletes train intensely with 2-3 practices per day. They primarily scull, and have opportunities to scrimmage or race during the camp.
Â
This weekend, the training camp members will row at the CORA Championships in Welland, Ontario.
Â
Moore is leading a USRowing training camp for the third time in the last four years in 2013. After a successful stint as the head coach and director of the Pre-Elite Camp in 2010, Moore and Syracuse hosted the U23 National Team Camp in 2012 on the crew's way to winning gold at the U23 World Championships in July.
