Show your support for the Orange by voting for track and field All-Americans Lauren Penney and Donald Pollitt, who have been named finalists for two awards given by the Niagara Track & Field Hall of Fame. Incoming freshman Nick Ryan has also received a nomination for the 2013 Trenton J. Jackson Award. Fans can vote for Penney, who is a contender for the 2013 Doriane Lambelet Award, and Pollitt, who is in the running for the 2013 Donald J. Paige Award by clicking here.
The Paige and Lambelet Awards are given annually to the most outstanding NCAA Division I male and female athletes in or from the Niagara Association. This marks the second year a Syracuse student-athlete has been named a finalist for these awards and the first year a female SU runner has qualified. The Jackson Award is given to the most outstanding male high school athlete in or from the Niagara Association.
Last year Jarret Eaton won the Paige Award for his incredible performance in the indoor season, becoming the first Syracuse individual track and field NCAA Champion after winning the 60-m hurdles.
Pollitt, also a hurdler, is nominated along with two throwers from the University of Buffalo (Jonathan Jones) and Cornell University (Stephen Mozia). Last season Pollitt became an All-American for his sixth-place finish in the 110-m hurdle NCAA Championship race. He also won the IC4A Championship and took home a silver medal at the BIG EAST Championship meet in the same event.
Penney is the first runner in SU history to be nominated for the Lambelet Award. She will contend with Kaitlin Kellner (Distance) and Rachel Sorna (Steeplechase/Distance), both from Cornell. Penney was an All-American last season in both the indoor and outdoor categories. She finished in eighth in the 5000-m run at the outdoor NCAA Championship and in 12th place in the 3000-m run at the indoor NCAA Championship.
Last year Ryan won the 1600-m run at the New York State Indoor Championship. He also took home the 3200-m race title in the outdoor championship and took second place in the 1600-m race.
Voting closes on Aug. 22 and the winners will be announced at the awards banquet on Sept. 7.
