SU Defeats Hofstra in Championship Game

The Syracuse field hockey team won the championship game at the Asics Invitational, defeating Hofstra 4-1 on Sunday. The Orange jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first half and maintained its advantage over the Pride (1-1) to improve to a 2-0 record on the season.
Leonie Geyer, who finished the weekend with one goal and three assists, was named the tournament MVP. Alyssa Manley (4 goals, 1 assist), Laura Hahnefeldt (1 assist) and Jordan Page (2 assists) were all named to the All-Tournament team.
Sophomore midfielder Manley scored two goals in the contest, which she also did in the season opener on Friday afternoon.
The Orange recorded 21 shots including 16 shots on goal in the win over Hofstra. The Pride were held to four total shots and two on target by the SU defense.Â
Syracuse had two penalty corners back-to-back early in the game but failed to capitalize on the opportunity with one shot blocked and one saved by Hofstra's goalkeeper Kaitlyn De Furo.
After 12:48 minutes of play, Emma Russell scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Jordan Page, to put the Orange ahead by one score.
Five minutes later, Alyssa Manley would give the Orange a 2-0 advantage on a shot set up by Leone Geyer.
SU scored again with 12:48 left in the half when Manley rebounded a shot from Sierra Degnan and sent it past De Furo. Manley has three unassisted goals on the season.
Neither team was able to put together an offensive play for the rest of the half, ending it with a score of 3-0 in favor of Syracuse. Hofstra recorded two shots in the first period of play, one on target, while the Orange got nine shots off, six on goal.
The Pride was awarded a penalty corner early in the second half and scored a goal off a tip-in by Carissa Witmer.
SU went on the attack, getting two shots off and a penalty corner within four minutes of the Hofstra goal. Emma Russell inserted the ball, which was shot by  Hahnefeldt and tipped in front of the goal by Lauren Brooks to give the Orange a 4-1 lead, which would not be answered by the Pride.
SU had a near goal mid-way through the second half when Hahenfeldt's shot off a penalty corner was saved by Hofstra defender Holly Andrews.
Syracuse dominated the rest of the game and closed out the contest allowing Hofstra to shoot only one time in the final 25 minutes.
The Orange will travel to Michigan State to take on the Spartans on Friday, Sept. 6 at 6:15 p.m.
