JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- No. 3 Syracuse takes the field for its 2014 season opener on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at Jacksonville. Opening draw is set for 5:30 p.m. The Orange is looking for a return trip to the championship game after losing in the national semifinals last season.
The game will be webcast free of charge on A-Sun TV. Fans can also follow the action on Twitter @Syracuselax. Head coach Gary Gait's squad enters the season ranked No. 3 in both the Inside Lacrosse and Lacrosse Magazine preseason polls. Syracuse finished last season with an 18-4 record and won the BIG EAST regular-season and tournament titles. The Orange advanced to the Final Four for the third time in four years.
Syracuse returns two of the nation's leading scorers from a year ago in senior Alyssa Murray and Kayla Treanor. Murray was a Tewaaraton Award finalist after ranking fourth in the country in scoring with a team-high 104 points in 2013. Treanor became the program's first freshman to earn first-team All-America honors. She finished second in the nation in goals (71) and sixth in points (95) in her rookie campaign.
The Orange defense held its opponents to less than 10 goals in 17 of 22 contests last season. SU was 17-0 in those contests. Senior Alyssa Costantino and junior Kelsey Richardson shared time in goal last season. The pair combined for an 8.55 goals-against average and a .407 save percentage. Syracuse returns several experienced defenders, including seniors Natalie Glanell, Kasey Mock and Liz Harbeson.
Jacksonville won the inaugural Atlantic Sun championship last season and lost to Denver in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Junior attacker Taylor McCord was named to the league's preseason Player of the Year, while senior defender Kaylee Quint was chosen as the preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Tuesday's game will be the second all-time meeting between the two schools. The Orange defeated the Dolphins, 21-8, in the opening game of the 2013 season.
Syracuse has an all-time record of 10-5 in season openers. SU is undefeated in its first game of the year since Gait took over the helm of the program in 2008.
