DURHAM, N.C. - The Syracuse University field hockey team makes it first-ever appearance in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship final against No. 11 Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon at Jack Katz Stadium on the campus of Duke University. The game is slated to begin a 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
Â
In its second year as a member of the ACC, Syracuse is looking for its seventh conference tournament title in program history. The Orange won six conference tournament championships as a member of the BIG EAST, with its latest title coming in 2011.
Â
Russell the Record Breaker
Junior forward Emma Russell has put together one of the greatest performances in ACC Championship history through the Syracuse field hockey team's first two games. Russell has already set two ACC Championship records, scoring four goals in a single game and by tallying six scores for the entire tournament.
Â
In the quarterfinals against Boston College on Nov. 6, Russell exploded for four goals and an assist in the team's 5-2 win. The Enniskerry, Ireland native matched the program single game record for goals scored. In addition, she was one point shy of matching the school record for points in a single contest.
Â
Russell followed up that effort with two more goals against No. 1 North Carolina on Nov. 7. She opened up the game with the first goal of the contest and concluded the match with the game-winning goal in overtime. It marked her fourth game-winner in extra time in 2014.
Â
Octoberfest
Entering the month of October, the Syracuse University field hockey team had lost three of its last four games, including three-straight losses. The month of October welcomed a new season and mentality, which the team has totally embraced.
Â
Since the start of October, Syracuse owns an 8-1 record and ascended to No. 6 in the latest coaches' poll. The club has knocked off four nationally ranked opponents in No. 1 North Carolina, No. 5 Louisville, No. 6 Duke, and No. 9 Boston College. Syracuse has scored at least three goals on seven occasions and has held its opposition scoreless twice.
Series Breakdown
Syracuse and Wake Forest will meet for the fifth time on Sunday afternoon. The all-time series is currently tied, 2-2. Wake Forest won the teams' last meeting, defeating Syracuse, 4-2, on Oct. 18. It marks the Orange's last defeat in 2014.
