Orange close out 2014 with 4-2 win over RIT
Alysha Burriss scored her first career hat trick and the Orange penalty kill unit killed off six RIT power plays to help Syracuse to a 4-2 win heading into break.
Burriss scored a pair of power play goals and added an empty netter in a physical conference battle that saw 35 penalty minutes handed out.
Â
Jess Paton scored on the Tigers second shot attempt of the game to take a 1-0 lead for RIT just 3:30 into the contest, but it was all Orange from there as Syracuse won the shots battle 26 to 18.
Burriss got the Orange on the board when Kaillie Goodnough successfully cleared the puck out to Julie Knerr who drew out the Tigers' defender and left the puck for Burriss at the top of the circle. Burriss then sniped a shot over the shoulder of Jetta Rackleff for the equalizer.
Â
Burriss lit the lamp again just 59 seconds into the third period on another Syracuse power play. Akane Hosoyamada sent a D-to-D pass to Nicole Renault who walked the puck into the slot and fired a shot that Burriss cleaned up the rebound on to take a 2-1 lead.
After RIT pulled Rackleff, Heather Schwarz put Syracuse up 3-1 with 59 seconds remaining on an empty netter. Danielle Leslie cleared the puck to Allie LaCombe who found Schwarz to finish the goal.
The Tigers quickly rebounded to make things interesting again, as Marissa Magueri scored just 16 seconds later to cut the Orange lead back to one.
Â
Burriss put the game away with 11 seconds left though on an unassisted, empty net goal. Her hat trick was the first since Shiann Darkangelo did so against Colgate during the 2012-13 season.
Jenn Gilligan made 16 saves for the Orange in the game.
Syracuse will now have a month off before traveling to Colgate on January 6 to start play after the winter break.
