SU Stifles Lindenwood, 5-2

ST. CHARLES, Mo.—The Syracuse ice hockey team (17-11-3, 8-6-3 CHA) used a three-goal first period to take a decisive 5-2 win over Lindenwood (5-22-2, 5-11-1 CHA) on Friday night at the Lindenwood Ice Arena. Three Orange contributed two points in the win with defenders Larissa Martyniuk, Nicole Renault and Caitlin Roach each contributing a goal and an assist.
Jenesica Drinkwater prevented the Lions from scoring for 44:09, making 12 saves in that span. The Orange controlled the puck for most of the game, outshooting LU 39-16 including 20 on net in the first period. SU also dominated the dot, winning 37 of 56 faceoffs.
Syracuse scored the only power play of the goal, going 1-for-5 on man-up opportunities while shutting down the Lions' four attempts.
The Orange struck first just over eight minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Syracuse worked the puck out of the left corner and sent it to the right faceoff circle where Martyniuk was there to shoot it past Nicole Hensley in net.
Jessica Sibley was the next to score when she skated the puck up the left side to the crease and wristed it in to take a 2-0 lead with 8:29 remaining in the first period. Cara Johnson was responsible for the eventual game winner when she skated the puck from behind the net and shoveled it in to give the Orange a 3-0 lead that it would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
Caitlin Roach made it a 4-0 advantage exactly five minutes into the second period, the only goal to be scored in the stanza. Lindenwood's Kendra Broad ended the shutout 4:09 into the third period but Nicole Renault re-gained SU's four-point lead just over four minutes later. Lindenwood notched one more in the middle of the final period but were unable to cut the lead to any more than three and the Orange continued its unbeaten streak to three games.
Syracuse and the Lady Lions rematch on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. ET in Lindenwood Ice Arena.
