LAST TIME OUT:
Syracuse's trip to Coastal Carolina was derailed due to weather, so the Orange still sit at 2-3 following its opening tournament of the season in Mobile, Ala. SU split the first two days, taking down Austin Peay 9-0 behind Sydney O'Hara's no-hitter and #21/25 UAB 3-2 on Nicole Lundstrom's walk-off single. The two losses both came at the hands of #20/22 South Alabama. SU wrapped up the tournament with a setback to McNeese State. Lundstrom and Julie Wambold each were named to the all-tournament team.
Â
O'HARA TOSSES NO-HITTER IN DEBUT:
Freshman Sydney O'Hara no-hitter in her collegiate debut against Austin Peay in a 9-0, six inning win on Friday, Feb. 8. O'Hara's no-hit shutout was SU's seventh in program history. She struck out 12 batters, becoming just the 10th pitcher in school-history to reach that mark. O'Hara also helped her own cause at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in.
WALK-OFF WIN:
A day after hitting her first career home run, freshman Nicole Lundstrom's heroics helped Syracuse walk-off with a 3-2 win in nine innings against #21/25 UAB on Saturday, Feb. 9. With no outs and runners at first and second, Lundstrom roped a single through the right side to end the game.
TWICE AS NICE:
Junior Julie Wambold and senior Jasmine Watson went back-to-back in the tournament finale against McNeese State. Wambold has been involved in each of the past four instances the Orange has gone back-to-back.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
UC DAVIS: The Aggies enter the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 4-9 record on the season highlighted by a key victory against Arkansas, who has received votes in both national polls. UC Davis, who is picked to finish fifth in their conference, is lef by preseason All-Big West members Justine Vela and Jasmine Lee.
Â
CALIFORNIA POLY: Led by senior outfielder Lauren Moreno and junior pitcher Chloe Wurst, the Mustangs currently hold a 4-6 record on the year. Cal Poly picked up their first win of the season against Oregon in the Kajikawa Classic and are picked to finish sixth in the Big West.
Â
OKLAHOMA: After starting the season ranked second in the nation, the defending national champions have been off to a slow start and sit at 18/13 in the national rankings. The Sooners, who are 6-4 on the season, are led by juniors Shelby Pendley and Lauren Chamberlain, both of whom were named to the Top 50 watch list for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award.
Â
STANFORD: Coming into the tournament undefeated on the season, the Cardinal are currently ranked 13/11 with a 12-0 record. Stanford is led by Cassandra Roulund who is hitting .436 on the year with 16 RBI, and pitcher Madi Schreyer, who has pitched four complete games and holds an ERA of 1.36.
Â
LONG BEACH STATE: Picked to finish second in the Big-West, the 49ers are 6-4 on the year. Long Beach State is led by Junior Ashley Holmes, who is the reigning player of the week in the conference after hitting three home runs and driving in 11 in a five game span.
LOOKING AHEAD: Syracuse will continue to play top-tier teams next weekend at the ESPN Citrus Classic. The Orange open with Nebraska-Omaha followed by No. 16/18 Missouri. The second day of competition SU will face an Auburn team that is on the cusp of entering the polls, as the Tigers are currently the first tea, in the "others receiving votes" category in both polls. Later that day Syracuse will face Bradley then close out the tournament with in-state foe Fordham on Sunday.
