MOBILE, Ala. - On the second day of competition at the Mardi Gras Torunament --/rv Syracuse split a pair of games, defeating No. 21/25 UAB in the opener and falling to No. 20/22 South Alabama in the nightcap on Saturday, Feb. 8.
Freshman Nicole Lundstrom provided more late-game dramatics for the second time in as many days, this time lifting the Orange (2-2) to a 3-2 win against UAB (1-3) in nine innings with her walk-off single. SU was shutout in the second contest 8-0 in five innings versus the Jaguars (4-0).
"I think game one we proved a lot to ourselves today," said head coach Leigh Ross. "We felt like today - the first game was the way we should be playing in those tight situations."
Senior Jasmine Watson went 2-for-2 at the plate with a two-run homer and also drew two intentional walks. Juniors Mary Dombrowski and Julie Wambold also recorded hits that went for extra bases.
Making her first collegiate start, freshman Christina Clermont lasted four innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out two in a no decision. Junior Lindsay Taylor came on in relief and went five scoreless innings to pick up her first win of the season. She struck out five and allowed just one hit.
Neither team could take advantage of the International tiebreaker rules in the eighth inning which places a runner on second to start the frame. A double play in the top half of the ninth ended UAB's chance at grabbing the lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Watson was intentionally walked for the second time to put runners on first and second and set up Lundstrom's game-winning hit.
Syracuse struck first on Watson's two-run blast in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Corinne Ozanne got the game's first base knock with a single up the middle and on the very next pitch Watson took Lannah Campbell out of the park to right center field.
UAB got one back in the third inning and evened the score at 2-2 in the fourth. With one out, Amy Dennis smacked a double to the left center gap and came around to score on Heather Pearson's single. Back-to-back hits by Ashley Johnson and Anna Theriot in the fourth knotted things up on Theriot's double.
The Orange put the leadoff runners on in both the fourth and the fifth and had a pair of runners on with one out in the sixth, but couldn't get any of them across the plate. Wambold tripled to begin the fourth and Watson was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners with only one out. However, Campbell struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
Taylor took over in the fifth inning and retired the first eight batters she faced before allowing a single to Caitlin Attfield in the seventh. Attfield then stole second, but was stranded after Taylor induced an inning-ending groundout.
"Lindsay Taylor threw awesome when she came in. She really did a good job of leading us and we just pieced together some timely hits," said Ross.
Following the dramatic win, Syracuse wasn't able to carry the momentum into the second game. South Alabama used a pair of four-run innings and two Jaguars each hit two-run shots in the process.
"In the second game, it (South Alabama) was a good team that we played. I think today's South Alabama team looked better than yesterday's South Alabama team overall," added Ross.
"We threw some young kids against them and it was some good experience for them and that's pretty much what I want them to take away from this. As hitters we didn't really make adjustments early enough on that pitcher (Beard) and the momentum got away from us and the game ended early."
Watson notched SU's only hit of the second game to finish the day 3-for-4. A day after pitching a no-hitter, freshman Sydney O'Hara took the loss.
O'Hara navigated her way through the first inning without any harm to extend her streak to seven innings without allowing a hit to begin her career.
That first hit – a home run to left center - came off the bat of Alex Breeden to lead off the second inning and give USA a 1-0 edge. O'Hara quickly sat down the next two batters, but couldn't get out of the inning. Stephanie Pilkington doubled in a run to push the lead to 2-0 and scored on a two-run homer by Blair Johnson.
South Alabama was back at it two innings later with another four runs. With one gone, Pilkington singled in a run to make it 5-0 and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Julie Moss. The next batter, Kaitlyn Griffith, capped the scoring for the night with a two-run blast to left center for the contest's final score.
