Drops Final Game To McNeese St.
MOBILE, Ala. – The --/rv Syracuse softball squad wrapped up its three day stint at the Mardi Gras Tournament with a 12-3 setback to McNeese St. on Sunday, Feb. 9 at Jaguar Field.
McNeese (3-2) exploded for 11 of its 12 runs in the fourth through sixth innings to build a comfortable lead. The loss was the Orange's (2-3) first of the season against a non-ranked opponent. Previously SU had lost a pair of games to host school No. 20/22 South Alabama.
Junior Julie Wambold and freshman Nicole Lundstrom both earned spots on the all-tournament team for their performances in the five games. Wambold batted .429 with a home run, a triple and two runs batted in. She was also perfect in nine chances in the field. Lundstrom hit .357 with a home run and three RBIs - one of which came in walk-off fashion against No. 21/25 UAB.
Wambold and senior Jasmine Watson provided the offense for Syracuse with a home run apiece. Wambold's was a two-run blast and Watson followed with a solo shot. Junior Lindsay Taylor took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season. She surrendered just three earned runs on four hits in 5.1 innings.
The Cowgirls looked to put runs on the board early, but Taylor worked out jams in each of the first two innings as McNeese left a runner stranded on third both times.
The floodgates opened for both teams beginning in the fourth inning as the clubs combined for eight runs over the next two innings with the Cowgirls taking a slim 5-3 edge into the sixth.
McNeese broke open a scoreless game in the fourth when Emily Vincent touched home plate following a pair of throwing errors. The Cowgirls proceeded to load the bases with no outs, but Taylor pitched her way out to limit any more damage.
Syracuse answered back in the bottom half of the inning, plating three runs off a pair of home runs. After freshman Sydney O'Hara drew a leadoff walk, Wambold sent a shot over the right field wall to put the Orange ahead 2-1. On the very next pitch, Watson made it back-to-back jacks with a rocket to left field.
In the top of the fifth, the Cowgirls scored four times to take the lead back for good at 5-3 and never looked back. McNeese scored its first run of the frame on a sacrifice fly. With one away, Kim Kennedy lined a two-run double to left center to put the Cowgirls back on top, then came around to score when Lakeyn Fontenot reached on an error.
Four more runs crossed the plate for McNeese in the top of the sixth and a two-run homer by Ashley Modzelewski in the seventh marked the final runs of the game and capped a three-run inning.
SU heads to Conway, S.C. next weekend from Friday, Feb. 14 to Sunday, Feb. 16 for five games in the Kickin' Chicken Classic. The Orange will play host school Coastal Carolina, along with Towson, La Salle and two games against Purdue.
