SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse women's rowing received its highest preseason ranking in 10 years this week when it debuted at No. 19 in the first CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll of the season.
The No. 19 ranking matches the Orange's highest since 2006. Syracuse was also 19th in the May 29 poll of last season after winning two silvers and three bronzes at its final BIG EAST Championship.
The last time Syracuse was ranked higher was on May 18, 2005 when the Orange finished the season No. 16. The only other time it has ranked higher in the preseason poll was in 2004 when it was No. 17 on March 11.
The strength and depth of the new ACC was on display in the season's first poll with five crews ranking in the top 20 (No. 3 Virginia, No. 8 Notre Dame, No. 18 Clemson, No. 19 Syracuse and No. 20 Duke). Another of the top 20, No. 16 Louisville, will join the conference for next season. The ACC's five ranked teams trailed only the Pac-12 (6) and tied the Ivy League.
The Orange began its spring racing season two Saturday's ago at Clemson with a strong performance on Lake Hartwell against the host Tigers, Boston University and Eastern Michigan. SU recorded victories in the varsity four and the second varsity eight, and finished a close second in a highly-contested race with Clemson in the varsity eight.
"To take two of three of the NCAA class boat races is very encouraging for the team," head coach Justin Moore said. "It is definitely a different script from previous years. Our team depth is being built and it's really starting to show."
The performance came at the end of a week of training for the Orange in South Carolina.
Syracuse's varsity eight, coming off a second-place finish in its final BIG EAST Championship last spring, looks to lead the Orange to new heights in its first spring in the ACC. The V8 had an impressive fall season, winning the Head of the Genesee and placing eighth against a very strong field at the Princeton Chase before opening its spring with a narrow second-place finish.
The Orange hosts its lone home event of the season on Saturday when No. 17 Cornell visits the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse for a scrimmage beginning at 8 a.m.
