SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked No. 59 Syracuse women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 8 North Carolina on Sunday, March 30 at Drumlins Tennis Center.
SU (3-10, 3-5 ACC) was swept at home for just the first time since losing 7-0 to Yale on April 5, 2003 while the Tar Heels (19-3, 8-1 ACC) ran its winning streak to eight consecutive matches.
The Orange was came within a few points of stealing the doubles point, but ultimately fell short. The freshmen duo of Rhiann Newborn and Maria Avgerinos took the 11th-ranked doubles team of Caroline Price and Whitney Kay to a tiebreaker on the second court, where the North Carolina tandem jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Newborn and Avgerinos battled back to bring the tiebreaker to 5-4, but Price and Kay closed it out with the next two points to give UNC a 1-0 lead.
Just minutes after the doubles point was clinched, juniors Amanda Rodgers and Komal Safdar dispatched Ashley Dai and Tessa Lyons at third doubles by a score of 8-4.
Syracuse lost all six of the singles matches in straight sets, with three of the matchups coming against nationally-ranked opponents in the top-50 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. After dropping the first set, senior Maddie Kobelt bounced back and made Jamie Loeb, the number one singles player, fight for every point, but eventually came up short 0-6, 5-7. Rodgers was downed by No. 7 Hayley Carter and Newborn lost to No. 47 Caroline Price on the second and third courts, respectively.
Syracuse hits the road next weekend with matches at Pittsburgh on Friday, April 4 at 5:30 p.m. and Maryland on Sunday, April 6 at 11 a.m.
