SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Having played five of its last six matches at home since Feb. 28, the nationally-ranked No. 61 Syracuse tennis team returns the road to take on Pittsburgh on Friday, April 4 at 5:30 p.m. and Maryland on Sunday, April 6 at 11 a.m. for a pair of weekend matches.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Orange (3-10, 3-5 ACC) dropped a 7-0 decision to previously ranked No. 8 North Carolina on March 30 at Drumlins Tennis Center. This marked the first time Syracuse was swept at home since a 2003 defeat at the hands of Yale. Syracuse came within three points of grabbing the doubles advantage, but ultimately fell short. Juniors Amanda Rodgers and Komal Safdar posted the only win, an 8-4 triumph on court three.
KOBELT CHASING THE CENTURY CLUB:
Senior co-captain Maddie Kobelt won her first five matches overall in ACC play and is 9-6 overall since beginning conference action. She needs just one more win to reach 100 career triumphs and become the 30th member of the Century Club at Syracuse.
INCLUSION IN THE ITA RANKINGS:
For the first time in 2014, the Syracuse tennis team entered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, coming in at No. 60 on March 11. The Orange rose to No. 59 on March 25 following a 4-3 win over then-ranked No. 34 Boston College. It is the highest ranking for SU since April 17, 2012 when the squad was 57th.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
PITTSBURGH: Pittsburgh (4-9, 0-9 ACC) fell to No. 1 Duke last weekend 6-1 and has yet to tally an ACC win this season. The Panthers started the season with a 3-0 record but has lost nine of its last 10 matches, including four in a row. All but one of the the losses came against nationally ranked opponents, with five of them versus top-15 competition. Pitt boasts one nationally-ranked player in No. 114 Audrey Ann Blakely, who is 31-14 on the season overall and 14-7 in singles action.
MARYLAND: After winning its first four matches to begin the season, Maryland (5-9, 1-7 ACC) has dropped nine of its last 10. The lone win during that stretch was a 5-2 victory at Pittsburgh on Feb. 28. Of the seven conference losses, the Terrapins have been swept in six of them - all to teams ranked in the top-30 at the time. Nataliya Bredikhina has posted the best record this season, sitting at 15-7 overall, including a 6-2 mark at fourth singles.
SERIES HISTORY:
Syracuse leads the all-time series with the Panthers at 8-1 and has won six in a row. The Orange swept the Panthers 4-0 in their most recent meeting during the 2013 BIG EAST Tournament. SU also notched a 6-1 victory against Pittsburgh earlier in the 2013 campaign.
The Terrapins have won the last four meetings between the two schools, breaking a 3-3 series tie to jump ahead 7-3. The last matchup was a 7-0 sweep for Maryland in 2001 while SU last recorded a win in 2000.
UP NEXT:
The Orange is back on the road for matches at No. 15 Clemson and No. No. 27 Georgia Tech on Friday, April 11 at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 13, respectively.
