CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Despite two home runs by freshman Nicole Lundstrom, Syracuse couldn't overcome four long-balls by North Carolina as the Tar Heels took the final meeting in the three-game series, 13-4, to earn the sweep on Sunday, March 9 at Anderson Field.
Lundstrom is now the 17th player in program history to hit at least two home runs in a contest. Sophomore Corinne Ozanne was the last to accomplish the feat, hitting three against Georgetown on April 14, 2013.
Dating back to yesterday, Lundstrom has three home runs in her last three official at-bats, walking once in between. She is only the third player in school history to hit a home run in three straight at bats. The other two were Hallie Gibbs, who walked twice between her second and third homers in a double header versus Niagara on May 4, 2011 and Amy Kelly, who did it in three consecutive trips to the plate in a doubleheader against Seton Hall on April 20, 2008.
Senior Shirley Daniels finished with a single, one run batted in and had a stolen base. Junior Mary Dombrowski was 1-for-2 and hit her third double of the season.
North Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run blast by Jenna Kelly. Syracuse got one back in the second on Lundstrom's first homer. The 13-pitch at-bat ended with Lundstrom going yard over the fence in right field.
A grand slam by Kristen Brown in the bottom half of the inning, however, gave the Tar Heels a 6-1 cushion. The first two batters reached base on a walk and bunt single, but freshman Christina Clermont got the next two out at first on bunts. A hit by pitch loaded the bases for Brown who went deep to straight away center.
Amber Parrish roped UNC's third home run on the day by leading off the bottom of the third with solo shot to push the North Carolina lead to 7-1.
The Orange put three runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth to climb back within 7-4 and had the tying run at the plate when the inning ended. It all started when Ozanne reached on an infield single and Lundstrom followed with her second homer of the contest. With two runners on following a double by junior Mary Dombrowski and hit by pitch taken by freshman Alyssa Dewes, Daniels lined a pitch back up the middle to plate Dombrowski from second ad make it 7-3. That brought up sophomore Riley Johnson who field out to center field and ended the threat.
With six runs in the home half of the fourth, the Tar Heels went ahead 13-4 and relief pitcher Lauren Batten tossed a perfect fifth to end the game early.
Syracuse will begin a stretch of four non-conference tilts in three days beginning with a matchup with Elon at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11.
