SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Taking advantage of a week off in between conference series, the Syracuse softball team will play three midweek non-conference contests between Tuesday, March 11 and Friday, March 14.
The Orange travels to Elon on March 11 at 5:30 p.m. and Campbell on March 12 at 5 p.m. for one-game each, and after a day off, goes to Appalachian State for on March 14 at 3 p.m.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
The Orange's tenure in the Atlantic Coast Conference officially got underway with three games at North Carolina on March 8 and 9. SU was swept in the series, losing Saturday's doubleheader 9-1 in five innings and 9-4. The following day, UNC hit four homers to take the finale 13-4, also in five innings.
LUNDSTROM'S LONG SHOTS:
With a multi-homer game in the finale at North Carolina, freshman Nicole Lundstrom became the 17th player in program history to hit at least two home runs in a contest. In the nightcap of the doubleheader the day before, Lundstrom hit a home run in her final at bat of the day and walked after, making it consecutive long balls in her last three official at-bats. She is only the third player in school history to go deep in three straight at bats. The other two were Hallie Gibbs, who walked twice between her second and third homers in a double header versus Niagara on May 4, 2011 and Amy Kelly, who did it in three consecutive trips to the plate in a doubleheader against Seton Hall on April 20, 2008.
DANIELS NEARING STEALS RECORD:
At North Carolina, senior Shirley Daniels recorded two more swipes and now has 69 in her career - just two away from trying the school record of 71 set her her older sister Lisaira. Daniels currently ranks 16th among active Division I NCAA sofbtall players in career steals and is eighth in stolen base percentage of .908 (69-76).
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
SCOUTING ELON
Tied for the longest winning streak in program history, Elon has won its last seven games to improve to 15-5-1 on the season, including back-to-back 3-2 wins over Towson and Radford last weekend. At the plate the Phoenix is led by Emily Cameron, who is tops on the team with a .424 batting average, six home runs and 18 runs batted in. Carleigh Nestor is one of five other players to bat at least .300 and has six home runs, five doubles and 16 RBIs. Pitcher Caitlin O'Shea boasts a squad-low 1.31 earned run average and a 4-1 record while Chelsea White has seven of the wins.
SCOUTING CAMPBELL
Coming off a winless weekend that included a loss to nationally-ranked Tennessee, Campbell now sits at 13-12 on the 2014 campaign. Speedster Erika Nesbitt leads all Camels with a .364 batting average and 12 stolen bases while Milly Martinet provides the power with club-highs of six home runs and 22 RBIs. Katie Baker's five wins and 84 strikeouts in the circle is a team-best while limiting opposing offenses with a 2.99 ERA. Courtney Roberts also sees plenty of action as a pitcher with three wins and a team-low 2.41 ERA.
SCOUTING APPALACHIAN STATE
After dropping its first six games of the season, Appalachian State bounced back to go 7-8 since then for a 7-14 overall record. Cara Parker paces the Mountaineers with a .356 batting average to go along with team highs of three doubles and two triples. Home run leader Ashley Seering (2) has batted in more runs than anyone else on the team with 11. Shivn Landeros has been a work horse so far in the circle, pitching more than half of Appalachian States available innings and has a 4-7 record to show for it.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Syracuse returns to conference action with a trip to the University of Virginia for a three game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 15 starting at 1 p.m. The final game of the set is on Sunday, March 16 at 12 p.m.
