SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked No. 68 Syracuse tennis teams looks to continue its success against top teams this season with a pair of matches on the road at No. 15 Clemson and No. 32 Georgia Tech this weekend.
The Orange opens the weekend at Clemson on Friday, April 11 at 2:30 p.m. and heads to Georgia Tech on Sunday, April 13 at 11 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Orange (4-11, 4-6 ACC) breezed past Pittsburgh after winning all six singles matches, including five in straight sets on courts two through six for a 6-1 victory on Friday, April 4. Senior Maddie Kobelt defeated a nationally-ranked opponent at first singles to claim her 100th career victory. SU fell short of the doubles point, but juniors Amanda Rodgers and Komal Safdar each posted two wins on the day, teaming up for an easy 8-2 victory at third doubles in addition to their individual wins.
Syracuse closed out the weekend with a 4-3 setback against Maryland. The loss was Syracuse's first against a non-ranked opponent this season. SU dropped the doubles point, but Safdar and freshman Rhiann Newborn and Valeria Salazar each posted wins in singles competition.
UNPARRALLED SUCCESS:
SU has won three matches this season against top-75 teams from the ITA, with all three versus teams ranked 50 or higher. That is the most in a single-season dating back to at least 2001, and believed to be the most by a Syracuse team in just one season.
KOBELT CLIMBS INTO CENTURY CLUB:
Senior co-captain Maddie Kobelt became the 30th member to join the prestigious Century Club last weekend by recording her 100th career victory in a thrilling three-set tiebreaker against Pittsburgh's Audrey Ann Blakely, the 114th ranked singles player in the nation at the time. For Kobelt, an ACC Player of the Week earlier this season, it is her second win over a ranked opponent this year, bringing her career total to three.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
CLEMSON: Last weekend, Clemson's (17-4, 9-1 ACC) 10-match winning streak was snapped in a 5-2 loss at No. 9 Virginia. Three of the Tigers' losses have been to teams ranked in the top-10, while 11 of the 17 wins have come against teams in the ITA top-75. At singles, Clemson has four players ranked in the top-124 and two pairings ranked within the top-39 in doubles. Romy Koelzer (37), Yana Koroleya (46), Tristen Dewar (108) and Beatrice Gumulya (124) all are ranked nationally in individual action. Gumulya is ranked with two doubles teams, coming in at No. 12 with Koroleya and No. 39 with Rompies.
GEORGIA TECH: After beginning the season 4-1 with wins over a pair of top-27 teams, Georgia Tech (9-7, 6-4 ACC) has dropped six of its past 11 matches. All but one of the Yellow Jackets' losses came to teams ranked 20th or better. The duo of Kendal Woodard and Megan Kurey are currently ranked fifth in the nation, and at one point was the top doubles team in the country. Woodard has also spent time this year ranked in singles competition.
SERIES HISTORY:
Syracuse and Georgia Tech began their new rivalry a year early as the two squared off for the first time just last year. With both teams ranked in the ITA top-75, Syracuse (72) lost a close battle at Georgia Tech (20) by a score of 4-3. Safdar posted one of three singles wins for the Orange in the loss.
Friday's meeting between SU and Clemson will mark the first matchup between the two schools.
UP NEXT:
The Orange closes out the regular season at home with matches against No. 66 Wake Forest and No. 26 Notre Dame on Friday, April 18 at 11:00 a.m. and Saturday, April 19 at 1:00 p.m., respectively.
