Orange match season-high 18 hits, one off the school record of 19
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - All nine Syracuse starters recorded a hit, combining for a season-high 18 base knocks as a team, and the Orange took the final game at Pittsburgh, 12-7, to complete a three-game series sweep on Sunday, April 13.
Syracuse's (18-18, 9-7) 18 hits matched a season-best, which was first set at Virginia on March 16 and was one shy of the school record 19, coming against Rutgers in 2011. SU has now won five straight and 13 of its last 18 games to get back to .500 overall on the season. It was also the sixth consecutive victory against Pittsburgh (13-22, 4-12) and 13th in the last 14 tries.
A trio of Orange women all finished with three hits or more, including freshmen Nicole Lundstrom and Sydney O'Hara, who each collected four hits apiece – both career-highs. Lundstrom was 4-for-6 with two doubles and a run batted in. O'Hara, who accomplished the feat just a day earlier, went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs.
Junior Mary Dombrowski also had a career day at the plate, reaching base a whopping five times by going 3-for-3 with two walks. She belted her first homer of the season and racked up a career-high four RBIs.
Freshman Christina Clermont (3-4) put together a solid outing of relief, grabbing the win with five innings of work and allowing just two unearned runs in the final frame to go along with three strikeouts. The five innings was Clermont's longest outing since lasting 5.2 innings in a no decision against Missouri on Feb. 28.
For the third time in as many games Pittsburgh raced out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning courtesy of a three-run homer by Maggie Sevilla after an error and walk put a pair of runners on base.
Syracuse countered in the next half inning with four runs on six hits, to go on top 4-3. O'Hara led off the frame with a double and scored on Dombrowski's one-out homer that snuck inside the foul pole in left to put the Orange on the scoreboard and begin a string of five hits in a row. Freshman Alyssa Dewes followed with a two-bagger, senior Shirley Daniels drove her in on a single through the right side and Lundstrom doubled down the right field line, plating Daniels to make it 4-3 in favor of SU.
The lead didn't last for long as Kathryn Duran homered with one out to tie things back up at 4-4 in the bottom of the second.
Both teams traded scores in the third inning and left the bases loaded, with Syracuse momentarily regaining the lead before the Panthers evened the game in the home half to make it 5-5.
Junior Julie Wambold and O'Hara registered back-to-back singles to begin the inning and Wambold came around to touch home on a single up the middle by Dombrowski two batters later. Dewes then drew a walk to put runners on every base, but Savannah King retired the next two batters to work her way out of the jam.
Once again, the Syracuse advantage didn't last as Tori Nirschl led off the bottom of the third with a solo shot to set the score at 5-5. An error, a single and a walk loaded the bases for the Panthers with two outs. However, Clermont struck out Kaitlin Manuel to limit Pittsburgh from pushing any more runs across.
In the fourth, the Orange went ahead for good at 6-5 following three consecutive singles by O'Hara, sophomore Danielle Chitkowski and Dombrowski. Senior Jasmine Watson walked to begin the frame and infield singles loaded the bases for Dombrowski, who sent a pitch back up the middle for her third hit of the day to drive in pinch runner Alexis Partyka.
Syracuse broke open a close one-run game with six runs crossing the plate in the final inning to extend the margin to 12-5. The Orange sent 11 players to bat, the first six reaching base on four hits and two walks, including three doubles.
Daniels and Lundstrom each doubled and a walk to sophomore Corinne Ozanne loaded the bases for Watson, who found the right center gap with a two-run single. Wambold walked to put runners on every base again and O'Hara crushed the next pitch for a bases-clearing double to set the score at 11-5. A sacrifice fly by Chitkowski brought in O'Hara for the Orange's final run of the game.
Clermont entered the final inning having retired eight straight batters and 10 of 11 before Pittsburgh attempted to rally. The Panthers scored a pair of unearned runs to close the gap to 12-7 and had two runners on base with two outs. However, Clermont settled down to get the final out and earn the win.
The Orange return to Syracuse for a midweek doubleheader against conference-foe Boston College on Wednesday, April 16 beginning at 3 p.m.
