PHILADELPHIA—Former track and field All-American Tony Washington ('90) has been selected as one of four individuals to be inducted into the Penn Relay Carnival Wall of Fame Class of 2014, the University of Pennsylvania announced on Monday morning.
Washington is a three-time winner of the discus throw at the Penn Relays including a meet record-setting throw of 205-8 (62.70) as a junior in 1989. His throw was the first Carnival record over 200 feet, and broke his own meet record of 193-9 (59.06), which he had set one round earlier.
He was a two-time All-American in the weight throw (indoor), three-time All-American in discus (outdoor) and won seven BIG EAST titles during his Syracuse career. After graduating, Washington went on to become a three-time Olympian, 1991 Pan Am Games champion, 1991, 1993 and 1999 USA Champion, 1992 and 1996 Olympic Trials champion and 1999 World Champion, setting a meet record and marking the first time an American won the discus competition at the World Championships.
A member of the 21st group of inductees, he is one of 99 individuals to receive the honor. The Penn Relay Carnival Wall of Fame began in 1994 at the time of the 100th running and inductees are chosen by a panel of Penn Relays experts. Inductees must be retired or competing as masters and are honored solely for their accomplishments at the Penn Relays.
