SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse softball team takes its last Atlantic Coast Conference road trip of the season, traveling to nationally-ranked No. 9/8 Florida State for a three-game series beginning on Saturday, April 19. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 5 p.m. and will wrap up the series on Sunday, April 20 at 3 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT:
Syracuse (20-19, 10-8 ACC) won two of its three midweek games, splitting a doubleheader with Boston College and winning on the road at Colgate for its seventh victory in the last eight outings and 15 in the last 21. After dropping the opener 2-0 to the Eagles, the Orange won a wild game with a walk-off single by freshman Sydney O'Hara to complete a three-run rally in the seventh and come out on top 13-12. SU matched a season-high 18 hits for the third time this season behind four apiece from O'Hara and junior Julie Wambold and three more from sophomore Corinne Ozanne and senior Jasmine Watson. Ozanne also recorded her second multi-homer game of the season and had five RBIs. At Colagte, freshman Christina Clermont tossed her first collegiate complete game with a career-high 12 strikeouts and got help from Ozanne, senior Shirley Daniels and freshman Nicole Lundstrom, who all homered.
LEADING OFF:
Senior Shirley Daniels hit the first leadoff homer of her career in SU's 11-1 win at Colgate on April 17. It was only the fifth time an Orange hit a home run to begin a game and just the first since Tonye McCorkle on April 28, 2006.
O'HARA TABBED ACC PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR SECOND TIME:
For the second time this season, freshman Sydney O'Hara was selected the ACC Player of the Week after leading the Orange to a 5-0 record. She is just one of three players in the conferece to be honored the Player of the Week twice and is the only freshman to hold that distinction. In the five games, O'Hara batted .500 (9-18) with seven RBIs, three doubles and a homer. She also got the job done in the circle, going 2-0 with a save, 15 strikeouts, two complete games - one of those being a two-hit shutout while the other a one-hitter.
CLERMONT K'S COLGATE:
Freshman Christina Clermont had her best collegiate outing against Colgate on April 17, pitching a complete game, four-hitter in Syracuse 11-1 win against the Raiders. She struck out a career-high 12 batters, besting her old mark of eight k's. Clermont is only one of eight pitchers in Syracuse history to record at least 12 strikeouts in a game.
OFFENSIVE OUTPUT:
Since beginning ACC play, Syracuse has been one of the best teams in the league offensively. In conference-only games, the Orange rank in the top-three in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. The teams' batting average of .338 is just three points behind Notre Dame for the top spot, while the .431 on-base percentage is the best in the league. SU's .554 slugging percentage ranks third in conference games. The Orange is on pace to set program records as a team in all three categories.
SCOUTING FLORIDA STATE:
After losing their first game of the season, the Seminoles (41-6, 18-3 ACC) reeled off 17 straight. Eight games later FSU strung together another 17 in a row, which has included wins against top-programs Alabama and Florida. National Player of the Year candidate Maddie O'Brien currently leads the ACC in the triple crown with a .464 batting average, 20 home runs and 74 RBIs. Courtney Senas also contributes heavily on offense and ranks second on the team with a .354 batting average, 10 homers and 43 RBIs. Seven-time ACC Pitcher of the Week Lacey Waldrop carries the workload in the circle, posting a 27-4 record with a 0.88 ERA, 219 strikeouts and 19 complete games in 33 starts.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Orange will close out the regular season next week, with four of its five remaining games at home. Following a midweek game at home with Niagara on Tuesday, April 22 and a doubleheader at Canisius on Thursday, April 25, Syracuse will host Virginia Tech in three-game series taking place on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27.
