TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Syracuse softball team concluded a three-game series at nationally-ranked No. 9/8 Florida State with a 9-1 loss in six innings at JoAnne Graf Field on Sunday, April 20.
Seven-time Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week Lacey Waldrop (29-4) pitched four innings in relief to earn the win for the Seminoles (44-6, 21-3 ACC). The 21 wins is an ACC record. Syracuse (20-22, 10-11 ACC), which entered the series winning seven of its last eight and 15-of-21, was run-ruled for just the third time all season.
Junior Mary Dombrowski was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored and freshman Nicole Lundstrom and Alyssa Dewes each had base hits. Freshman Sydney O'Hara (13-10) took the loss in 2.1 innings of work.
The Orange found itself in a similar position as the first two games in the series, trailing 2-0 early after the Seminoles put a pair of runs on the scoreboard on Kelly Hensley's two-run double to the right center gap.
This time, though, SU battled back early, scoring a run in the top of the third to cut its deficit in half to 2-1 off Waldrop. Dombrowski legged out a double down the right field line for her third hit in four at-bats off Waldrop on the weekend. Dewes followed with a high-chopper and beat the play at first, and an overthrow by Waldrop allowed Dombrowski to come home.
In the bottom half of the frame, Florida State chased O'Hara with four runs to increase its lead to 6-1. With one out, Courtney Senas walked and came all the way around to score on Victoria East's double to left. A single by Alex Powers placed runners on the corners for Celeste Gomez, who crushed a three-run homer.
Waldrop settled down following her shaky first inning, retiring 11 of her last 12 batters while striking out seven of them.
FSU added three runs in the home half of the sixth to run-rule the Orange. The Seminoles had the bases loaded with two away in the inning when pinch runner Ellie Cooper scooted home on a wild pitch to make it 7-1. After a walk to load the bases back up, Powers singled up the middle the end the game and give the 'Noles a 9-1 walk-off win.
Syracuse returns home to host Niagara in a single game on Tuesday, April 22 at 6 p.m.
