GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Syracuse women's rowing team's varsity four crew was named the ACC Crew of the Week by the conference office on Tuesday. The Orange posted the top time among 21 4+ boats at last weekend's Clemson Invitational.
Syracuse's varsity four consisted of Alyssa Vasiliou (cox), Alex Zadravec (stroke), Saydee McQuay (3), Anna Kaszycki (2), Tosca Wilson (1 on Saturday) and Kristin Hanifin (1 on Sunday). Head coach Justin Moore's 4+ crews are directed by assistant coach Alicea Kochis '02.
"We are honored and humbled to be selected the crew of the week in such a strong conference," Kochis said. "We know that team depth and results are crucial to getting a bid to the NCAA Championship and this boat rose to that challenge over weekend by beating several teams ranked ahead of them in the national poll. Kudos to the student-athletes!"
The Orange posted the best time of 21 crews on the final day of the Clemson Invitational on Lake Hartwell after recording the second-best time on day one of the regatta that brought together some of the top crews in the country. The Orange blazed to victory in its seven-boat race on Sunday in 7:50.6, 1.4 seconds faster than second-place Washington State and also faster than all the crews in the other two heats, including 1.8 seconds faster than Wisconsin, the only boat to beat Syracuse on day one.
SU's 4+ boats have consistently shown the impressive depth of the Orange program, recording wins previously this spring at the Orange Challenge and Kittell cups as well as the season-opening regatta at Clemson on March 15.
Last fall, SU's varsity four finished first at both the Foot of the Charles and the Head of the Genesee. The trend of success for the fours can be traced back to the 2012 BIG EAST Championship where the Orange took gold in the event, the program's first in a varsity race since 2005.
Syracuse returns to action this weekend when it heads to Virginia for the Monticello Invitational on April 26-27, its final tune-up before the ACC Championship on May 17-18.
