SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Following its most successful season in years, the Syracuse women's rowing team received eight scholar athlete awards and three All-Region honors when the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced its end-of-season awards on Tuesday.
Junior Georgia Hamilton and senior Rebecca Soja were named South First Team All-Region, while senior Maggie McCrudden was named South Second Team All-Region. All three rowed in head coach Justin Moore's varsity eight boat the claimed victories at the Orange Challenge Cup and Kittell Cup and finished third at its first ACC Championship while being ranked in the top 20 all season.
Hamilton was also an All-ACC First Team honoree and won the women's rowing award at the Cuse Awards. Soja was named All-ACC Second Team this spring, while McCrudden is a former All-BIG EAST honoree. McCrudden and Soja were four-year members of the V8, while Hamilton just completed her second season in SU's top boat.
The CRCA's All-Region teams recognize the outstanding performances of rowers and coxswains from each of the five regions, organized into first and second-team selections. Nominated student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coaches' recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams' varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season.
These athletes will be eligible for All-America awards selection following the NCAA Rowing Championships.
Rose Aschebrock (magazine and news journalism), Gillian Carlucci (sociology and political science), Chelsea Frawley (undeclared), Caroline Habjan (honors biology), Georgia Hamilton (international relations and Arabic), Amy Ludovici (health and exercise science), Rebecca Soja (architecture) and Miranda Williams (psychology and women's studies) were all named CRCA Scholar Athletes.
It is the third year in a row that Soja and Williams have earned Scholar Athlete honors, while Aschebrock, Habjan and Ludovici each earned their second-straight honor.
The eight Orange honorees met the following scholar athlete criteria:
• The student-athlete has met all eligibility rules as defined by her institution
• The student-athlete was in her 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of eligibility
• The student-athlete rowed in her institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75% of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event.
• The Head Coach of the student-athletes institution was a member in good standing of the CRCA as of May 1, 2014.
• The student-athlete has had a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career (through the fall semester/quarter for the current competition year).
