SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's rowing team was ranked No. 19 in the season's final CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll announced on Wednesday, the program's highest final ranking in nine years.
Head coach Justin Moore's Orange was ranked in the top 20 throughout the entire season, peaking at No. 16 on April 9, also a nine-year high for the program. The No. 19 final ranking comes Syracuse finished third overall at its first ACC Championship behind No. 5 Virginia and No. 9 Notre Dame and narrowly missed making its first NCAA Championship since 2005.
The last time Syracuse finished a season ranked higher in the national poll was in 2005 when the Orange was No. 16.
The 2013-14 season was one of the most successful ever for the Syracuse women's rowing program. In Moore's fourth season at the helm, the Orange won cup races at the Orange Challenge Cup and Kittell Cup, going 2-of-3 in cup races for the second-straight season. SU also recorded race victories at the Head of the Genesee , Princeton Chase, the inaugural Small Boat Sprint Championship, Foot of the Charles, the spring opener at Clemson, Clemson Invitational and Monticello Invitational.
Junior Georgia Hamilton was named All-ACC First Team and took home the women's rowing Cuse Award, while senior Rebecca Soja was named All-ACC Second Team. They were both named South First Team All-Region by the CRCA and senior Maggie McCrudden took second team honors.
In addition, Rose Aschebrock (magazine and news journalism), Gillian Carlucci (sociology and political science), Chelsea Frawley (undeclared), Caroline Habjan (honors biology), Hamilton (international relations and Arabic), Amy Ludovici (health and exercise science), Soja (architecture) and Miranda Williams (psychology and women's studies) were all named CRCA Scholar Athletes.
Things look bright for the program heading into the 2014-15 campaign as, despite the departure of a talented senior class, the team is stocked with young talent as evidenced by the improved depth that was on display throughout the year in the lower boats, in addition to a strong incoming freshman class. In the varsity eight, the Orange will return six of the nine crew members from the ACC Championship (coxswain Katherine Isaza, Holly Johnston, Hamilton, Chelsea Frawley, Ailish Tinney and Caroline Habjan) plus Ludovici, who missed most of the spring due to injury.
