After finishing first in Pool C with a 1-0-1 record and +7 goal differential, Ireland played Ukraine to a scoreless draw before meeting Italy in the final game which resulted in a 3-3 tie. The Italians finished first in the nine-team tournament and Ireland finished second, earning both countries automatic promotion to the 2016 EuroHockey Junior Championship.
This was the third different level in which Russell, an Enniskerry native, represented her home country at European championships. She previously was a member of the Irish U16 and U18 national teams.
After a strong freshman campaign in 2012 in which she tallied nine goals and four assists in helping lead Syracuse to the Final Four, Russell took her game to a new level in 2013, scoring 12 goals and tallying 11 assists for a team-best 35 points. An explosive offensive threat, four of her goals were game-winners as the Orange ranked No. 2 in the country in the final coaches poll.
Russell's 2013 accolades include being named All-ACC Second Team and Longstreth/NFHCA All-Mideast Region First Team.
Russell and the Orange begin the 2014 season on Aug. 29 at Ohio State. The home opener at J.S. Coyne Stadium is slated for Saturday, Sept. 6 against Albany at 2 p.m.
