Emily Carey assisted Australia in a fourth place finish at the U23 Championships in Varese, Italy
Syracuse Universities' junior rower out of Brisbane, Australia, Emily Carey, competed in the A final of the Women's 8+ in the U23 Championships and assisted her nation to a fourth place finish.
In just 6:12.83, Carey and her Australian teammates crossed the finish while the gold went to the United States just 4.95-seconds ahead at 6:07.88.
"The race was well-fought the entire way down the course. For a crew who only had two weeks together, we believe that we had an awesome performance. We had nothing to lose and everything to gain as a crew," Carey said following her the competition.
That "nothing to lose and everything to gain" mentality was evident as Australia threatened the United States and Germany in the top two spots throughout the first half of the contest.
"It was personally a great experience and eye-opener to what world racing is. Above all, it was a great learning experience for all of us!"
Coach Justin Moore had no shortage of reasons to be impressed with his rising junior and how much she has accomplished in just seven months time at SU,
"She arrived in Syracuse on January 3, adapted to a new university setting, a new team and an entirely new culture. She earned a 3.7 GPA and rowed with distinction in our first and second varsity crews."
Coach Moore finished by expressing how excited he is to work with Carey in the future,
"What is most exciting to me about Emily earning a spot on this year's Australian U23 team is that she just turned 18, and she has completed just one semester at Syracuse. We are very excited to work with her and help her develop as a student, as an athlete and as a person."
