
Field Hockey Suffers 3-2 OT Loss To BC

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 4 Syracuse field hockey team suffered a 3-2 loss in overtime against No. 11 Boston College on Saturday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Boston College junior midfielder Romee Stiekema recorded the game-winning goal in the 74th minute off a penalty corner.
"We have a mix of experience and inexperience and in ACC play, things happen a lot faster," head coach Ange Bradley commented. "I have a lot of confidence in these kids. Congratulations to Boston College for a hard fought victory."
Junior forward Emma Russell and freshman back Annalena Ulbrich each recorded goals on the day. Senior back Jordan Page assisted on both goals and Russell registered a helper on Ulbrich's tally. The Denver, Pa. native also moved into sixth place in program history with 29 career assists.
Syracuse hit the ground running, scoring a goal in the third minute of play. Page played a ball down the left side of the pitch to a streaking Russell. The Enniskerry, Ireland native slotted the ball past the opposing keeper for her sixth goal of the season.
Boston College responded with a tally of their own three minutes later. BC sophomore midfielder Emily McCoy finished completed the penalty corner, which deflected off an SU stick into the back of the net.
Out of the halftime break, Boston College pulled ahead. In the 39th minute, senior midfielder Emma Plasteras pushed the visitors ahead. Stiekema was credited with an assist on the play.
The host Orange did not pack it in. Syracuse outshot their opponent 8-4 in the final 35 minutes of regulation and finally tied things up with 12 minutes to play. Ulbrich blasted a penalty corner into the net for her fifth goal of 2014. Page and Russell assisted on the play.
Tied at 2-2 after 70 minutes of play, the two teams went to overtime. Boston College recorded the win with a pass from senior midfielder Katlyn Soucy across the circle to Stiekma, who placed the ball into the goal.
Junior goalkeeper Jess Jecko had four saves on the day, including a breath-taking stop on a 1-on-1 breakaway in the second half. BC junior goalkeeper Leah Settipane recorded eight saves.
SU is back in action on Friday, Sept. 26 at No. 10 Virginia. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va.
