
Syracuse Suffers 3-1 Loss At Virginia

Holds 13-3 shot advantage in the second half
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 10 Syracuse field hockey team suffered a 3-1 setback at No. 3 Virginia on Friday night. Freshman midfielder Lieke Visser tallied the only goal of the night for the Orange.

The host Cavaliers (8-2, 3-0) took an early lead in the opening 10 minutes of the contest. Freshman midfielder Tara Vittese, the ACC Player of the Week, started things off with a goal in the seventh minute of play. Two minutes later, she struck again, putting SU (6-3, 0-3) in an early 2-0 hole.

SU came out firing in the opening minutes of the second half, as Virginia senior goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone recorded four stops in the first four minutes of the latter 35 minutes. Despite the early onslaught by the Orange, Virginia extended its lead. Sophomore midfielder Lucy Hyams tallied a goal in the 40th minute to give the Cavaliers a 3-0 edge.

The team finally broke through for its first tally of the night in the 54th minute. Visser broke through and had a one-on-one with opposing keeper. Visser slotted it past Johnstone to cut the UVA lead to 3-1.

Syracuse outshot Virginia, 13-3, over the final 35 minutes of play. Johnstone made 10 stops for the Cavaliers. Junior goalkeeper Jess Jecko made four first-half saves for the Orange and finished with five on the night.

The Syracuse field hockey team is back in action on Sunday when it hosts in-state foe Hofstra. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The game will be televised on Time Warner SportsChannel.
