SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Former Syracuse men's rowers Tony Johnson and Ted Kakas were both recognized by USRowing as recipients of two of its annual awards for their outstanding service to the sport of rowing in 2014, USRowing announced on Monday, Sept. 22.
Johnson earned the USRowing Medal, given in recognition to a member of the rowing community in the United States who has rendered conspicuous service to rowing. It is the highest honor USRowing can bestow upon an individual.
Johnson rowed collegiately at Syracuse University, graduating in 1962. Following his career at SU, he earned a silver medal in the pair at 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. Johnson then served as the head coach at both Georgetown and Yale since 1967. He retired from coaching at Georgetown in May 2014 after 28 years there.
Kakas garnered the John J. Carlin Service Award, which honors an individual who has made significant and outstanding commitment in support of the sport.
A 2010 Letterwinner of Distinction, Kakas rowed at SU from 1960-64. He helped the freshman crew to an Eastern Sprint Championship in 1961. Following his time in Syracuse, Kakas has been a member of the USRowing Masters Committee, serving as the committee chairman for a number of years. Some of his numerous achievements include helping organizing and launching National Learn to Row Day, instituting the AA masters category, and expanding masters categories at the Head of the Charles.
Johnson will be officially recognized at the Golden Oars Awards Dinner on Nov. 20 in New York City, while Kakas will be honored at the USRowing Annual Convention in Jacksonville, Fla. on Dec. 5.
