Orange Defeats Hofstra, 6-2, on Sunday

Visser leads the way with five points

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 10 Syracuse field hockey team defeated in-state foe Hofstra, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. With the victory, Syracuse snapped its three-game loss streak.

"We are really working to keep growing," head coach Ange Bradley stated. "Our whole focus today was sticks on the ground, inside the 25, aggressive, ruthless, relentless pressure. We have to continue to build on the second half of our Virginia game, where, in the ACC, we haven't been as aggressive in the first month. We really made that our focus today."

SU (7-3, 0-3) certainly was aggressive from the start. Syracuse scored two goals in the first 16 minutes of action and never conceded its lead. Freshman midfielder Lieke Visser led the way for the Orange with five points on two goals and an assist. Senior back Jordan Page and freshman back Annalena Ulbrich both contributed three points on one goal and two assists each.

The team jumped out to an early lead in the fourth minute of action. Graduate student Kati Nearhouse played a ball to the far post. The ball found the stick of freshman midfielder Laura Hurff, who one-timed it past the Hofstra keeper to take a 1-0 lead.

In the 15th minute, Ulbrich scored her sixth goal of her inaugural campaign off a penalty corner. Visser and Page were credited with assists on the play.

Two Hofstra (7-4, 0-0) goals sandwiched SU's final tally in the first half. Pride senior forward Jonel Boileau scored in the 18th minute and struck again in the 33rd minute. In between, Visser tallied her first goal of the day off a penalty corner in the 26th minute of play. Page recorded a helper on the play.

Leading 3-2 out of the halftime break, Visser scored her second goal five minutes into the second half. Inside the shooting circle, Ulbrich slid a pass to Visser, who put it into the left corner of the net.

Seven minutes later, the Orange struck again. Off a penalty corner, Ulbrich blasted a shot towards the net. Junior midfielder Alyssa Manley deflected the shot and put it past the Hofstra keeper to five SU a 5-2 advantage.

Page completed the scoring for the game with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Following a Hofstra penalty, Page was awarded a penalty stroke. The Denver, Pa. native lifted the ball into the top right corner to seal the victory for the Orange.

Syracuse is back on the road on Sunday, Oct. 5 when it travels to Princeton. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Princeton, N.J. Â
