UConn, Providence Up Next For Ice Hockey

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women's ice hockey team will continue its schedule on the road this weekend when the Orange takes on UConn on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. followed by a Sunday contest against Providence at 2 p.m.
The Orange (1-2-0) play eight of its next nine games on the road, including this weekend's matchups against UConn (0-1-1) and Providence (0-2-0). Syracuse is coming off an opening week of three games that included contests against No. 5 Clarkson and No. 9 Northeastern. Despite starting the season with two tough losses, the Orange bounced back with a 3-2 win on the road over New Hampshire.
"I thought all three games were really solid performances for us and I think if anything we recognize the things we need to do to get better," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "We are excited about getting out on the road and playing some Hockey East teams and let's get on a little roll here."
Seniors Melissa Piacentini and Nicole Ferrara as well as sophomore Stephanie Grossi have been on a roll for the Orange offensive efforts thus far this season, registering four points apiece. Piacentini leads the team with three goals while Ferrara has tallied two goals and an assist. Grossi has dished out a team-high four assists for Syracuse.
Syracuse will look to build off its win over the Wildcats starting on Saturday with the Huskies.
'Cuse vs. Connecticut
This is the sixth meeting between the two programs, dating back to their first matchup in 2009. The Orange has a 4-2-1 record all time against UConn. Both sides are is 1-1-1 in the last three meetings. Before a 2-2 tie last season, the Orange won the previous contest by a final score of 2-0 in 2012.
Emily Costales and Jessica Sibley scored the two goals for the Orange last season. Syracuse is 3-0-1 at home against the Huskies, but 1-2-0 on the road.
Scouting UConn
The Huskies opened up the 2015-16 campaign with a 2-1 loss to No. 8 Boston University before tying Union 2-2. Brittany Berisoff currently leads the Huskies with two goals while Caitlin Hewes has the team's third goal.
Goaltenders Annie Belanger and Elaine Chuli have split time in the crease. Chuli made 46 saves on 48 shots against Boston while Annie Belanger registered 26 saves on 28 shots versus Union. In two games this season, the Huskies have been outshot by a total of 76-58.
Taking on the Friars
This will be the sixth matchup for both teams, dating back to 2009. The Orange and Friars played to a 3-3 tie last season. Piacentini scored two of the three goals against Providence last season. Both sides have played each other very evenly in their five games against one another, holding an overall record of 2-2-1.
Scouting Providence
Providence had two tough games to get the season started, losing to No. 3 Wisconsin 5-1 and 8-1 over the weekend. The Friars will play against Colgate on Saturday before taking on Syracuse on Sunday. Madison Sansone and Kate Friesen have the only goals thus far this year for the Friars.
Sarah Bryant has been the primary goaltender for Providence this season, allowing 11 goals while making 66 saves. Bryant has a .857 save percentage and a 5.97 GAA going into the game against Colgate. Wisconsin outshot Providence by a total of 85-30.
