STORRS, Conn.- The Syracuse women's ice hockey team opened up a two-goal advantage in the first frame against UConn on Saturday afternoon, but was unable to hold on, losing to the Huskies by a final score of 4-3.
Redshirt senior Nicole Ferrara gave Syracuse (1-3-0) a 1-0 lead just 23 seconds into the contest, which was eventually followed by a score from senior Nicole Renault eight minutes later. Despite the two-goal lead, UConn (1-1-1) tied the game up at two in the first period by scoring two goals in a matter of 16 seconds.
Seniors Renault and Melissa Piacentini led the offensive charge for Syracuse by manufacturing a goal and assist each. Both co-captains combined for nine shots in the contest.
Freshman goaltender Maddi Welch made her first collegiate start in between the pipes for the Orange, registering 15 saves while allowing all four goals. Syracuse tallied 36 shots on net as UConn goaltender Annie Belanger made 33 saves to secure the first victory of the season for the Huskies.
With the game tied at two headed into the second frame, Piacentini put Syracuse back on top by accepting a pass from sophomore Dakota Derrer and burying it past Belanger, making it 3-2. As Piacentini's goal came at the 13:13 mark of the second period, UConn' Jordy Zacharias evened the game less than a minute later.
As both teams headed into the third period notched up at three, UConn would eventually take its first lead of the game three minutes in. Theresa Knutson was able to beat Welch just 2:57 into the period, which stood up as the game-winning goal.
Syracuse will stay on the road to take on Providence tomorrow at 2 p.m. Both live video and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
