Syracuse earns two top-10 finishes in Boston
BOSTON – The 2015-16 Syracuse University women's rowing team opened its fall season at the Head of the Charles Regatta this weekend. Syracuse sent out three boats in the world's largest two-day regatta.
The Orange placed sixth in the women's championship eight event, its highest showing of the event. In the women's championship four, SU finished in eighth place. Christine Habjan and Yasmine Hemida placed 12th in the women's championship double.
"Overall, the crew represented Syracuse and themselves well this weekend," head coach Justin Moore stated. "This is the first year we have stepped into the full competition, fielding a championship eight, four, and double. We are very happy with how the team equated itself."
Competing in the championship eight event for the first time since 2006, Syracuse placed sixth in a time of 16:49.380. The top-five finishers in the race all competed at the 2015 NCAA Championships in Gold River, Calif. SU beat out Michigan and Wisconsin, who both participated in last year's national championships, by more than one second in the event.
"I was really happy how we competed against some of the nation's best crews, who are consistently in the NCAA Championships," added Moore. "Overall, it was very good run down the course."
In the championship four, Syracuse finished in eight place, covering the course in 19:00.095. The Orange was the fifth-best crew among collegiate entries in the event.
"They handled themselves very well," commented Moore. "Finishing in the top 10 is a very good result, given the challenging position they were in in the race course."
The Syracuse double placed 12th in the championship double race on Saturday afternoon. The pair completed the event in 20:28.203. Habjan and Hemida were the top collegiate finisher in the race.
"That was a really neat boat," concluded Moore. "They competed very well. We continued the streak, three years in-a-row we are the top collegiate finisher in the women's championship double."
Syracuse will be back in action at the Collegiate Small Boats Challenge starting on Friday, Oct. 30 in West Windsor, N.J.
