SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Syracuse women's ice hockey head coach Paul Flanagan will return to his alma mater and former squad St. Lawrence on Saturday, Oct. 24, as the Orange take on the Saints in a non-conference contest starting at 3 p.m.
Syracuse (3-3-0) is coming off two consecutive wins, including a big 7-1 win over RIT to start off College Hockey America play. The Orange will look to make it three wins in a row on Saturday when the team starts a four-game road trip, beginning with St. Lawrence (2-5-1).
Flanagan was the head coach for the St. Lawrence women's ice hockey program from 1999-2008 before moving on to his current role with the Orange. This will be the first time that Flanagan returns to St. Lawrence and be on the visitor's bench.
"I will have rather mixed feelings, but first and foremost, we are going there to try and win a hockey game," head coach Flanagan said. "Obviously, it's a place that I have a very strong affinity for. I'm from up there, went to school there and went to work there every day for 20 years. I'm looking forward to it, but it's important to keep a focus on what our team is trying to accomplish."
The Canton, N.Y. native accrued a 230-83-24 record with the Saints. While at St. Lawrence, he directed his fleet to the ECAC Hockey Tournament in each of his nine years and his 2005-06 Saints became the first squad in any sport at St. Lawrence to win more than 30 games in a season.
Although there is rich history with Flanagan and St. Lawrence, the Orange are focused on continuing its winning streak. Before the 7-1 win over CHA rival RIT, Syracuse defeated Providence by a final score of 4-0.
In the win over RIT, sophomore Stephanie Grossi tied the Syracuse single-game record by registering five total points. Grossi had a stellar performance, finishing the contest with three goals and two assists in the victory. Senior Melissa Piacentini had four assists for the Orange.
ORANGE OFFENSE
Piacentini and Grossi lead the Orange offensive efforts so far this season with 11 points each. Piacentini leads has four goals and seven assists while Grossi has three goals and a team-high eight assists. Senior Nicole Ferrara has scored a goal in each of the last five contests, totaling five goals this year. Defenders Nicole Renault and Megan Quinn have also gotten in on the offensive action, combining for 11 points for Syracuse.
Syracuse is averaging 10 more shots than its opponents this season, outshooting the competition by an average of 31-21 per game. The Orange are also outscoring teams 22-15.
SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE
Like the Orange, St. Lawrence is coming off two consecutive wins. The Saints took down Vermont 4-0 before a 3-2 win last weekend. With a week off, the Saints will be fresh headed into its home contest against Syracuse.
Kennedy Marchment leads the Saints with eight points, including a team-high five goals to go with three assists. Both Hannah Miller and Amanda Boulier each have seven points on the season. Miller has three goals and four assists while Boulier has one goal and a team-high six assists.
Sonjia Shelly is the St. Lawrence primary goaltender, playing in six games so far this season, garnering an overall record of 1-3-1. Shelly has a 3.04 goals against average to go with a .915 save percentage.
LAST TIME
Syracuse and St. Lawrence met for the first time in program history during the 2013-14 campaign, as the Orange beat the Saints by a final score of 3-0 inside War Memorial. Current players Piacentini, Renault and junior Heather Schwarz all dished out an assist in the win.
