CANTON, N.Y.-Despite leading 1-0 after the first period, the Syracuse women's ice hockey team gave up three consecutive goals to St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon, allowing the Saints to come away with a 3-2 win on their home ice in non-conference play.
Sophomore Alysha Burriss put Syracuse (3-4) up 1-0 at the 14:16 mark, which held up for the remainder of the period, but St. Lawrence (3-5-1) scored twice in the second frame and once more in the third period to prevail.
After going down 3-1 in the third period, the Orange pulled senior goaltender Jenn Gilligan late in the game and utilized a goal from sophomore Megan Quinn to cut the deficit down to one. Quinn's goal came with only nine seconds left on the clock, leaving not much time on the clock for a shot at the comeback.
The Saints outshot the Orange 25-22 in the contest. Gilligan registered 22 saves in between the pipes while allowing all three goals. St. Lawrence played two goaltenders in the win, starting with Brooke Wolejko before moving onto Sonjia Shelly. Wolejko made seven saves while Shelly finished with 13 saves.
After Burriss' goal in the first frame, the Saints came back with a strong second period. Justine Reyes tied the game up at one just over two minutes into the period before Hannah Miller gave the Saints the go-ahead goal four minutes later. Four minutes into the third frame, St. Lawrence made it 3-1 when it was Amanda Boulier beating Gilligan for the score.
The Orange continued to put pressure on the Saints for the remainder of the contest, but struggled to put the puck in the net until Quinn's goal with nine seconds left. With not much time left after the goal, the Saints eventually came out on top, beating the Orange 3-2.
Syracuse will stay on the road for its next four games; all of which are College Hockey America games. The Orange will start the road trip on Friday, Oct. 30 with a weekend series against Robert Morris.
