SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's ice hockey team will look to rebound and get back to .500 when the squad takes on local rival Cornell at War Memorial Arena on Saturday, Nov. 14th at 3 p.m.  Following a six game road stretch, Saturday's contest will be the first home game for the Orange since Oct. 21st.
The Orange (5-6-1) went 2-3-2 over the last six away games and dropped its last contest against No. 4 Clarkson on Tuesday. The Golden Knights got on the board early, scoring their first goal just under three minutes after the opening faceoff. After falling behind 5-0 in the third, sophomore Meghan Quinn scored on the power play with 31 seconds left in regulation to prevent the shutout.
Senior goaltender Jenn Gilligan had 29 saves in the contest, including 13 in the first period. Junior Jessica Sibley led the way for the Orange at the dot with a game-high 10 faceoff wins. Clarkson was carried by Cayley Mercer who assisted on three of the five goals for the Golden Knights, while recording nine shots on goal. Genevieve Bannon and Olivia Howe each had a goal and an assist in the contest as well.
Following the road trip, the Orange returns home to take on Cornell (1-4-1). The Big Red has only played six total games this season and recorded their only win this season on the road.
"As a once a year thing, this Syracuse versus Cornell game, I just think we have established a pretty good rivalry with them," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "I think it goes back a few years where it got a little feisty and I like the way that they play. They come after you and make you earn everything."
SCOUTING CORNELL
The Big Red has only scored five goals this season with three of those goals coming from Hanna Bunton. Kaitlin Doering and Pippy Gerace both have a goal while eight different Big Red players have dished out an assist.
Goaltender Paula Voorheis is the leading Big Red candidate to play in between the pipes. Voorheis is 1-3 this season with a 2.36 goals against average and .924 save percentage.
GAMES AT WAR MEMORIAL
Saturday's game against Cornell will be the first of six games played at War Memorial Arena at the Oncenter this season.Â
The Orange is 3-2-0 overall at War Memorial that includes a 5-2 loss on Dec. 3, 2013 to No. 3 Cornell. Syracuse took an early 2-0 lead in the first period, but the Big Red rattled off five unanswered goals to come away with the win.
"In terms of playing at the War Memorial, I know that I'm excited," Flanagan said. "The fact that we can change venues and change atmospheres and go down to the War Memorial should be fun. The Crunch have been so supportive in having us."
