SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Despite the Syracuse women's ice hockey team scoring two goals against local rival Cornell in the third period on Saturday afternoon, the Orange struggled to overcome its 3-0 first period deficit, losing to the Big Red by a final score of 5-2 at War Memorial Arena.
Trailing 3-0 after both the first and second frame, sophomore Steph Grossi scored for Syracuse (5-7-1) only 11 seconds into the third period, pulling the Orange within two. Cornell (2-4-1) utilized a three-goal first period and tacked on two more scores in the third frame to come away with the 5-2 win.
It only took the Big Red 1:08 to get the scoring going, as Cassandra Poudrier beat senior netminder Jenn Gilligan for the game's first goal. Cornell then added two more goals in the final three minutes of the first frame, taking a 3-0 lead into the second period.
After both teams being held scoreless in the second period, Grossi's early third-period goal gave Syracuse some life. Although the Orange was consistently getting offensive chances, Cornell put its lead back to three off a goal from Pippy Gerace, making it 4-1.
Sophomore Alysha Burriss scored her fifth goal of the season at the 15:13 mark of the third period, bringing the Orange back within two at 4-2. The Big Red found an answer only 22 seconds later as Brianna Veerman extended the Cornell lead back to three, 5-2.
Both sides finished the contest with 13 shots on target. Gilligan made eight total saves in between the pipes while Cornell goaltender Marlen Boissonault secured 19 saves.
For the second consecutive time, Syracuse lost to Cornell at War Memorial Arena by a final score of 5-2 with the last time occurring in 2013.
The Orange will next play on Wednesday, Nov. 18 when the team travels to take on CHA rival RIT at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on Time Warner Cable Sports and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
