SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Backed by two goals from sophomore Emily Costales, the Syracuse women's ice hockey team took down No. 9 North Dakota on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Fighting Hawks by a final score of 5-2 at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Five players for Syracuse (7-9-1) finished with two points or more, including junior Jessica Sibley who had a game-high three points. Despite two North Dakota (9-5-2) goals from Becca Kohler, the Orange dominated the game offensively, outshooting the Fighting Hawks 33-15.
Sophomore netminder Abbey Miller made her first start of the season in between the pipes for the Orange, registering 13 saves to pick up her first collegiate win. After shutting out the Orange yesterday, Shelby Amsley-Benzie allowed four goals despite 28 saves.
North Dakota got on the board first with a goal from Kohler midway through the first frame, taking a 1-0 lead into the second period. Syracuse answered early in the second frame and dominated the entire period.
Starting with a goal from Sibley to tie the game at one, the Orange tallied two more goals to take a 3-1 lead into the third. It took Sibley only 49 seconds to tie the game up in the second period. Costales then gave Syracuse a 2-1 edge on a power play, beating Amsley-Benzie on a scrum in front of the net. Junior Heather Schwarz added the third Orange goal just two minutes later, leading Syracuse to a 3-1 lead headed into the final period.
Kohler brought the Fighting Hawks within a goal at the 4:14 mark in the third frame on a power-play goal. After a flurry of opportunities from both sides for the next 12 minutes, senior captain Nicole Ferrara broke the silence by blasting a shot top shelf to put the Orange back up by two. With North Dakota reverting to an empty net late in the game, Costales added some insurance with her second goal of the game to lead the Orange to the 5-2 win.
The Orange will return home next week for a College Hockey America weekend pair against Penn State, starting on Friday Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. Both games will be held at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Both live video and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
