Syracuse defeats Drexel, 83-62, on Tuesday night
SYRACUSE, N.Y – Down 15 points with 35 seconds remaining in the first quarter, the RV/RV Syracuse University women's basketball outscored its opposition by 36 points over the remainder of the contest to score a 83-62 victory against Drexel on Tuesday night.
Â
"We were able to get our press set," head coach Quentin Hillsman stated. "I thought that was humungous for us, to get our press set and be able to speed the game up. That was the difference in the game. We started scoring the basketball and that was it."
Â
Drexel (4-7, 0-0) led, 22-7, with less than a minute remaining in the opening frame. Syracuse (8-3, 0-0) used a 30-9 run to overtake the opposition for good. In that stretch, senior guard Brianna Butler knocked down three 3-point field goals to move into ninth place on the SU all-time scoring list. She has scored 1,286 points in her collegiate career.
Â
The Dragons attempted to mount a comeback late in the game, but the Orange used a late run to put them away. Leading by five points with 8:53 remaining in regulation, the club would close the contest on an 18-2 run en route to its eighth victory of the 2015-16 season.
Â
Junior center Briana Day put together one of her best performances of her collegiate career. Day recorded a personal-best 26 points and 13 rebounds on the night. It marked the second straight contest that a Syracuse player recorded a double-double.
Â
Redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes notched 16 points against Drexel, while junior guard Alexis Peterson had 11 points on the night. Syracuse owns a 6-2 overall record when at least three players score at least 10 points.
