Syracuse beats Howard, 97-48, on Wednesday night
SYRACUSE, N.Y – Behind the program's first triple-double since the 1983-84 season, the RV/RV Syracuse University women's basketball team recorded a 97-48 victory against Howard on Wednesday night in the Carrier Dome. Senior guard Cornelia Fondren recorded 12 points, 10 rebounds, and a program-record 10 steals.
Â
"Cornelia had the first triple-double in more than 30 years," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "She did an awesome job of just filling the stat sheet. I am just really happy with the effort of our kids today."
Â
Fondren joined Martha Mogish and Chris Palombi as the only three student-athletes in program history to record triple-doubles in a single game. With 10 steals on the night, the Memphis, Tenn. native matched the Syracuse single-game steals record, which was set by junior guard Alexis Peterson in the season opener at Rhode Island on Nov. 13.
Â
Behind Fondren's effort, Syracuse (9-3, 0-0) erupted for 97 points on Wednesday evening against Howard (2-12). It marked the most points scored by the Orange since the squad set the program record with 113 points against Maryland Eastern Shore on Nov. 20, 2013.
Â
It was all Orange in the Carrier Dome on Wednesday night. The visiting Bison took an early 2-0 lead, but would not hold an advantage for the rest of the contest. Syracuse was able to stretch its lead out to 54 points at the end of the fourth quarter, its largest lead during the 2015-16 campaign.
Â
Junior center Briana Day led the team in scoring for the second time in as many days. Day tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double in two days, as well. The Raleigh, N.C. product has registered 46 points and 23 boards in the past 80 minutes of competition.
Â
Redshirt senior guard Maggie Morrison also had a career night. Morrison knocked down four 3-point field goals and finished the contest with a personal-high 14 points. The Millersville, Md. native also swiped four steals, setting a career-best.
Â
Syracuse is back in action on Friday afternoon when it hosts UTRGV in the Carrier Dome. Tipoff is slated for 12 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at 1-888-DOMETIX, or by visiting the Carrier Dome box office (Gate B).
