Orange in Final Preparation for Season Opener
2/5/2015 4:00:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
Syracuse starts the 2015 campaign Saturday at noon against Denver.
Syracuse's season opener is just two days away and the Orange is busy making final adjustments before it faces Denver on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 12 p.m. Syracuse will also play Canisius on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Â
The Orange returns just six starters from last year's team that won a school-record 21 games and advanced to the national championship game for the second time in three years. While the starting lineup will feature new faces, several players have valuable experience and will step into new roles for Syracuse as it embarks on its quest for the program's first national championship.
Â
"We have a new group," head coach Gary Gait said. "We've changed up a lot of what we do to adapt to the players that we have. I think we have tons of talent that has been sitting and waiting, especially on the offensive and defensive ends, to have opportunities. We have great experience coming in, some new starters that we haven't seen before and some new offense, new defense – things that we haven't done before. Now it's just a matter of waiting and seeing how all of the work we've put in as a staff comes to fruition. Do we come together, do we gel, do we become a tight team – that's what we're hoping and we're expecting some good things from the group."
Â
The offense will be led by 2014 Tewaaraton Award finalist Kayla Treanor. She led the nation in scoring last season with 117 points and finished second in goals with 79. Treanor earned first-team IWLCA All-America honors for the second consecutive year and earned the IWLCA Attacker of the Year award. The Orange returns five of its top seven scorers from last season when it led the nation in scoring.
Â
Defensively, senior Kelsey Richardson returns in goal. After sharing time with Alyssa Costantino for the past three seasons, Richardson will be the starter. She finished last season with an 8.73 goals-against average and a .378 save percentage. Senior Mallory Vehar is the Orange's most experienced defender. She finished fourth on the squad in ground balls last season (32) and was tied for fifth in caused turnovers (15). Syracuse held its opponents to less than 10 goals in 14 times last season.
Â
Individual game tickets can be purchased for $5. Fans can purchase a "Lax Pack" ticket package for $25, which includes 10 general admission tickets that can be used as a season ticket or as a group ticket package.
