Orange Move to Third in CHA Standings
The Syracuse hockey team bumped up to No. 3 in the CHA standings on Friday night, thanks to a 2-1 win over Robert Morris in the series opener between the two schools.
The Orange, which outshot the Colonials 38-26 in the game, including a 26-14 advantage over the final-two periods, used goals from Julie Knerr and Nicole Renault to improve to 5-5-5 (15 points) in conference play, while the Colonials dropped to 6-7-2 (14 points) in league action. The win was the 99th in program history for Syracuse.
Knerr got 'Cuse on the board just seven minutes into the game, when she made a heads up play by collecting a loose puck behind the net and then pushing it past Robert Morris goaltender Jessica Dodds near-post. Laurence Porlier and Heather Schwarz set up the play.
The assist was part of a strong game from Porlier, who finished second on the Orange with five shots in the game.
After a scoreless second period, Maddie Collias put the first and only puck past Jenn Gilligan in the game. Megan Eady assisted on the play which came 3:21 into the final period.
Gilligan made 25 saves in the game for Syracuse.
It wouldn't take long for the Orange to answer Collias' goal, though. Nicole Renault lit the lamp for 'Cuse just over two minutes later.
After Melissa Piacentini and Stephanie Grossi's attempts wouldn't go, they found Renault deep in the offensive zone, who buried the puck for the eventual game-winner. Grossi and Piacentini were credited with assists on the play.
The result held final, and 'Cuse picked up its first win over Robert Morris of the season after tying on the previous two attempts this season.
The teams will conclude their regular season series with one another on Saturday at 3 p.m.
