Jocelyn Cater has now given up two runs or less in 11 games this season
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Syracuse (7-11, 0-3 ACC) fell in another pitcher's duel to Virginia Tech (16-3, 3-2), 2-0. With her performance today, Jocelyn Cater has thrown seven consecutive games with two earned runs or less.
"Joc (Jocelyn Cater) continues to take the circle with a winning mindset and give us a great effort each time out. Now it's time for us to go out there and produce for her and win some games." Coach Ross said of her starting pitcher. "I'm really proud of her for the effort she has put in and I'm proud of her for the way she's carried herself since arriving on campus."
"I know it was really hard for her to sit out last season after transferring but she's had a great work ethic and a great attitude since day one. It's been great to see all of the hard work she's put in leading up to this season translate into success."
The Highlights
• Cater struck out five and walked four in six innings of work. She gave up three of four Virginia Tech hits in the final two innings and allowed just two runs in the game. This is the 11th game this season in which she's been charged with two runs or less.
• Despite the loss, Syracuse out-hit the Hokies, 5-4.
• Sammy Fernandez recorded her first career extra base hit with a double to left.
• Sydney O'Hara and Cater each doubled in the game. The two-baggers were O'Hara's third and Cater's second of the season.
• Maddi Doane and Julie Wambold each singled in the game, raising their batting averages to .267 and .289 respectively.
Late Scoring Defeats 'Cuse
Once again, Syracuse and Virginia Tech went back-and-forth as neither team could put runs on the board until the fifth inning. The Orange threatened in the fourth after Doane kicked the inning off with a single and later advanced to second on a single by Wambold.
After doubling in her last at-bat, Virginia Tech was unwilling to give Cater anything to hit, walking her to load the bases with two down and Annie Toczynski at the plate. Toczynski gave one a ride to center but a Hokie was there for the third out of the inning.
The next inning Virginia Tech almost took Cater's head off with a one-out single up the middle. Cater was able to get the next batter out on a pop up but the Hokies scored the first run of the game with a triple just over Toczynski's glove.
After threatening again in the sixth with a runner on second and two down, Virginia Tech escaped the Orange again, this time with a strikeout to end the inning. The Hokies followed up with a home run in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh.
Virginia Tech allowed a base runner to reach on an error with one out but the defense did what it needed to do to finish off Syracuse and shut out the Orange, 2-0.
