
'Cuse Alums Rely On Fan Votes

A group of former Syracuse University men's basketball players has joined forces to compete in The Basketball Tournament, a five-on-five, single-elimination, winner-take all event.

Syracuse's entry includes 2003 national championship-team members Josh Pace and Hakim Warrick. Former NBA first-round draft choice Donte Greene, Rick Jackson and Baye-Moussa Keita round out the key front-court performers. In the backcourt, Eric Devendorf joins Pace and Brandon Reese. Each of the players owns international professional experience and Greene and Warrick played in the NBA.Kevin Belbey, who was a team maqnager at Syracuse, serves as the squad's general manager.
Eighteen teams with the most fan votes in each region as of June 1 qualify for the tournament. Six additional teams in each region are also eligible. The Northeast Region squads will compete in Philadelphia July 17-19 with the top four finishers advancing to the Super 17 in Chicago for competition July 23-25. The four region champions will then compete August 1-2 in New York.
There is one million dollars in prize money with some of the winnings going to the championship team's fan group. A roster made up of Notre Dame alumni won the event a year ago.
